Check Out Fire and Ice for $10.97

Fire and Ice Review

Fire and Ice is a fun movie with plenty of action. It was filmed rotoscoped (Live actors that are painted over with anamation) which gives the action a very fluid movement. The plot is so simple you might have to turn your brain off to enjoy it. The evil wizard Mekron and his mom are trying to rule the world by magicly pusing this glacier over their enemies. It is up to the kingdom of Firekeep to stop them. In the middle is Teegra, a curvy knockout of a pricness, who is kidnaped by Mekrons ape men soldiers. She meets a man named Larn who tries to rescue her. There is also a totally BAD-A$$ warrior named Dark Wolf. More on him later.
A lot of the reviews say this movie is adolescent drek but here is where the movie does somthing different. Although Larn is the leading man he is really not that tough. Infact he spends most of his time running away and fails to rescue Teegra twice. So even though Larn is the leading man, Dark Wolf is the leading butt kicker, and it is a joy to watch him chop through bad guys with his battle ax. Infact thats all he does. He wears a wolf mask for reasons we don't know, and wants to kill Mekron and his mom for reasons he doesn't tell. There is alot in this movie that doesn't get explained, like how can people ware speedoes and live in a glacier without getting frost bite. Maybe thats why Mekron and his mom have blue skin.
Anyway, if you think fat bottomed girls make the world go round, and would like to see a beef cake barbarian mow down bad guys with an ax then this is a movie for you. However, if you are like some of the weenies on this board who call this movie "sexist" and who actually don't want to see a hot girl in a lavender bikini then give this one a pass and go back to letting your wife force you watch Steel Magnolias.

Fire and Ice Overview

From The Director Of The Original Animated THE LORD OF THE RINGS And The Illustrator Of CONAN THE BARBARIAN

It began as a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration between two of the greatest icons of the fantasy genre: Controversial animator Ralph Bakshi (director of FRITZ THE CAT, WIZARDS and the original THE LORD OF THE RINGS) and legendary illustrator Frank Frazetta (creator of the iconic CONAN THE BARBARIAN, VAMPIRELLA and Edgar Rice Burroughs book covers). It became - and remains - one of the most startling animation epics of all time. Now experience a world unlike any ever seen, where savage warriors, horrific monsters and luscious maidens battle for the soul of a civilization in a time of good and evil, pleasure and pain, and FIRE & ICE.

This long-unavailable cult favorite has been remastered in High Definition from original vault materials, remixed in stunning 6.1 DTS-ES and 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround EX, and loaded with exciting Extras.

Fire and Ice Specifications

The mighty-muscled heroes and big-bottomed babes of fantasy artist Frank Frazetta inspired animator Ralph Bakshi (Fritz the Cat, Wizards) to create the swords-and-sorcery epic Fire and Ice. Bakshi uses a technique called rotoscoping, which uses live-action film of actors as the template for animation, allowing him to put realistic action into fantastic environments. The verisimilitude of movement in a cartoon can be startling, but that's about all Fire and Ice has to offer; the wafer-thin story, overwrought characters, and clumsy dialogue are vapid cliches. Of much greater interest are the extras in this two-disc set, including a making-of feature that demonstrates the painstaking process of rotoscoping; enthusiastic commentary from Bakshi, who's a jovial, down-to-earth guy with a thick Brooklyn accent; deliriously fatuous diary notes from one of the actors; and a feature-length documentary called Frazetta: Painting with Fire, which reveals the artist to be more intriguing than any of the barbarians he's famous for. The effusive praise of other fantasy artists and "Frazetta historians" occasionally veers into Spinal Tap territory, but it's fascinating watching Frazetta turn from a 1950s James-Dean-style tough guy into the king of fantasy art. Though his work is often dismissed as adolescent kitsch, the documentary persuasively argues that Frazetta deservedly dominates his corner of the art world. --Bret Fetzer

FRAZETTA'S WORLD BROUGHT TO LIFE BY BAKSHI -- SWEET ON BLU-RAY - Robin Simmons - Palm Springs area, CA United States
Within five years of the released of his animated LOTR, director Ralph Bakshi co-produced another heroic fantasy with legendary artist Frank Frazetta. The story is set in a parallel -- or is it an alternate? -- world that reflects the iconic art of Frazetta. Life-like movements, again from clever rotoscoping, imbue the human and non-human characters with a vitality and eerie charisma. The blond hero Tarn and the scantily clad heroine in distress Teegra work out their differences with the icy sorcerer Lord Nekron and his willful mother Juliana in an Armageddon landscape of primeval beauty populated with fearsome subhumans and flying dragonhawks.

All the background art was done by then unknown artists Thomas Kinkade and future Dinotopia designer James Gurney. The commentary with producer/director Bakshi is a conversation with fan and filmmaker Lance Laspina (Frazetta: Painting With Fire). From Blue Underground.

Fire and Ice DVD - Nora S. Corbin - Ohio, USA
Both copies of Fire and Ice I received were brand new and awesome! My boyfriend and my brother were both thrilled to see Bakshi's animation. Thanks!

Buy It For the Bonus Feature - James Dawson - Woodland Hills, CA United States
Teegra the barely covered beauty is voluptuously, outrageously sexy, but the animation is embarrassingly primitive. Also, I can't believe that no one has pointed out the music's VERY distracting similarity to the "Hogan's Heroes" theme, with occasional touches of "Jaws."

The real reason to buy this set is to get the excellent -- even if a little too fawning -- documentary about Frank Frazetta. Fascinating stuff.

Ice Age - The Meltdown (Full Screen Edition) Review

My son loves it and that is all that matters. Great buy! We have watched it too many times too count.

Ice Age - The Meltdown (Full Screen Edition) Overview

Your favorite sub-zero heroes are back for another incredible adventure in the super-cool animated comedy Ice Age the Meltdown! The action heats up?and so does the temperature?for Manny, Sid, Diego and Scrat. Trying to escape the valley to avoid a flood of trouble, the comical creatures embark on a hilarious journey across the thawing landscape and meet Ellie, a female woolly mammoth who melts Manny's heart. With its dazzling animation, unforgettable characters and an all-new Scrat short, Ice Age: The Meltdown is laugh-out-loud fun for the whole family!

Ice Age - The Meltdown (Full Screen Edition) Specifications

The love life of a woolly mammoth--handled with G-rated delicacy--drives this sequel to the first computer-animated romp in the age of prehistoric mammals. While the first Ice Age took a delightful premise and suffocated it with a formulaic plot--in which a mammoth named Manfred (voiced by Ray Romano, Everyone Loves Raymond), a sloth named Sid (John Leguizamo, Moulin Rouge!), and a sabre-tooth tiger named Diego (Denis Leary, Rescue Me) helped an abandoned human infant return to its tribe (basically, Three Mammals and a Baby)--the sequel takes the now-familiar setting, gives it a shapeless, episodic storyline, and yet somehow becomes pretty darn entertaining. Faced with the threat of a flood from melting ice, our heroic trio are on the run to escape from their blossoming valley. On the way, they meet a female mammoth (Queen Latifah, Bringing Down the House) who thinks she's an opossum and get menaced by some freshly defrosted carnivo! rous fish. Add into the mix a herd of lava-worshipping mini-sloths, some Busby Berkeley-style vultures, and more ingenious slapstick featuring the acorn-crazed Scrat, and Ice Age: The Meltdown will amuse even jaded adults. -- Bret Fetzer

Not suitable for kids, waste of time for adults - J. Beggs - US
We loved the original Ice Age, but the Meltdown was just a big disappointment. Lots of braty language, characters are mean, no plot, a bunch of sexual jokes and hints. The original Ice Age, in spite of some sassiness, was a good story about the value of friendship and forgiveness. The point of the Meltdown??? Hmmmm....

Great but can't match the original - Wesley Archer - Reno, Nevada
Fma brotherhood is truly a great anime but it still cannot compare with the original anime, true the fights are better and the animation is nicer but looks can only go so far. No other anime including this one can match the intense drama, perfect pacing and mind-blowing storytelling of the original fullmetal alchemist, fma brotherhood is once of the best animes I've ever seen and it doesn't even come close because it ruins too many scenes with lame Japanese humor that doesn't translate well. I hate to say that the Americanized animes are the best, but this is true. Buy the original series on DVD before you consider this product, it is a better value not just in terms of money, but is a substantially better productFullmetal Alchemist: Season One Box Set

It only gets better - Tsurera -
I'm assuming that if you are buying the second dvd set of FMA:Brotherhood, then you already know and like what this show has to offer.
Well it only gets better. More characters, plot intrigue, rich story, and character developments. Not to mention beautiful animation.
(Again be aware this is a remake of FMA. It is not like the original TV series. It follows the manga plot.)

You seriously can't go wrong with this show.

Much Better Than Before - Massacist - My own Mind
Anime fans will enjoy FMA:Brotherhood much more than the original anime. This series follows the manga, and is more visually exciting, and a much better all around anime. Simply a must have.

Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit 7 & 8 (2pc) Review

Balsa tells Chagum of her childhood in the mountain kingdom of Kanbal and how she came to wield a spear. In the spring the egg tells them to head for the place of celebration and dodging of the egg eater. Shuga arrives with an army to protect the prince. In the end it takes the combined forces of the Mikado's soldier' spies, Balsa' spear, and Tanda's knowledge to save Chagum and remove the egg from his body. At the end, Chagum returns to hero's welcome to the palace and the arms of his mother. Balsa, Tanda, and Madame Toragai are royally rewarded. In a private courtyard, they say their final goodbyes to Chagum. He shows signs of missing his life as a commoner. Balsa decided to return to Kanbal to lay some old childhood ghosts. Tanda vows to wait for her whether its 2 years or 20 years before her next visit.

The volume 7 DVD started sputtering from the beginning credits and finally stopped playing during the first episode. Fortunately, Adult Swim finally finished the series the third time they started showing it. The volume 8 DVD played fine. Media Blasters is handling the DVD distribution in the US. They need to improve their quality control in DVD production. I have already ordered a second volume 7 DVD. Let's hope this one plays.

Jakers - Sheep on the Loose Review

I had seen only a few episodes of Jakers! on PBS and Fell in love with it the first time I saw it.
My daughter is only 19 months old so the lessons learned in the show are a bit beyon her- but I am going to ensure that Jakers will be a fav of hers because I like it so much!
There are so many educational shows anymore trying to teach classical music, spanish, sign language and so on which is great- but Jakers teaches lessons in life and does a great job at injecting humor at the same time.
Waking Thor is by FAR the best episode on this DVD (don't get me wrong, they are all great episodes) I wanted to giggle and cry at the same time.
I've never seen anything as hearwarming, cuddly and funny as Jakers.
Kudos to the creators of one of the greatest Kids cartoons ever!!

Jakers - Sheep on the Loose Overview

Jakers! is a celebration of the joys good friendship can bring while the excitement of adventure and imagination inspires kids to learn from their own experiences. Through Jakers! children learn about life lessons and each episode conveys a moral that kids learn through daily experiences. Each episode of Jakers! is set in two distinct places and times: 1950’s Ireland and the present day

Great series - M. Sutliff - colorado
This is a wonderful series that was on PBS. I am considering caneling my giving simply since they canceled it. :(

No violence, great stories, funny funny. As in the best kids animations, this one is funny for adults. Mel Brooks is an absolute crack up as the "leader" of the sheep.

The Irish accents are incredibly endearing.

these are great shows, good humor, good values. You'll laugh with the kids - you'll all love it!

Jakers is a great series - Hondo - Fairfax, VA
I have a daughter who is two years, eight months, and she can't get enough of these DVDs. The stories are extremely well done, and the complete lack of violence creates a storyline that's enjoyable, entertaining, and not likely to raise any concerns from an impressionable 2- to 3-year old. At least at this point in time, she's been requesting Jakers viewing time every night. Beautifully animated, and entertaining for adults (with levity provided by Mel Brooks as Lead Sheep). These are great, great cartoons for the kids. Some of the all-around best I've ever seen, and much better than any of the cartoons that were available when I was a kid. Highly recommended.

Hurray for Huckle: The Best Outside Fun Ever! Review

So I haven't watched or read anything Richard Scarry since I was a kid, and this DVD brought back good times. Richard Scarry has been entertaining and educating kids with Busytown characters, including Huckle Cat, Lowly Worm and Hilda Hippo. It has great graphics and it is not at all cheesy at I expected.

There are six episodes on this DVD so you can watch them separately or watch them all at once! I know we prefer episodes because my boys can't sit for the length of a whole DVD usually, so this is perfect for them to watch a few episodes, play, and then come back. Although, this DVD is so cute they have watched it in its entirety. The episodes also are wholesome and perfect to get your kids in the mood for springtime! I also don't mind watching it with them and I know that they are watching something appropriate.

Hurray for Huckle: The Best Outside Fun Ever! Overview

There are plenty of mysteries to keep the Busytown friends very busy! Missing playground items, a mysterious note at the Busytown Bank, an empty swimming hole and a flying saucer are only the beginning of the mysteries Huckle and the Busytown friends try to solve with some outdoor fun!

Great Price Funimation for $16.49

The Familiar of Zero: Complete Series One (Viridian Collection) Review

I'd heard a lot about this show prior to buying, so I was counting down the days until Funimation released it on DVD.
The wait was worth it, because "Familiar of Zero" is one of the funniest, most entertaining shows I've seen in a long
while. The two main protagonists, Saito and Louise, have an interesting chemistry which makes for a strong plot foundation,
one that the writers and director build on with a fantastical setting and gut-busting side characters such as the
sultry Kirche and snobby trust-fund brat Guiche. Watching all of these characters interact is the highlight of the show.

Where it disappoints, however, are the action sequences. You never really feel drawn in or excited by the fights, such as
you would in a series like, say, "Bleach." They feel rushed, not visceral or heart-pumping. It's much more interesting
during the comedy/romance segments.

The animation (done by JC Staff) is great, and the music is generally good. The opening theme is catchy and infectious, if not
laced with idiotic lyrics that obviously signify that the song was made expressly FOR the show as opposed to a real song being
licensed for use WITH the show. However, the ending theme may very well make you rush for the "chapter skip" button on your
remote, because it filled me with a sensation somewhat akin to the feeling you get when somebody runs their nails down a
chalkboard(I think it's sung by the voice actress of Louise, but I' m not sure; either way, skip it, IT'S ANNOYING!!!)

At the end of the day, "Familiar of Zero" succeeds as a romance/comedy anime for guys, what with all the blatant fan service
and pervy jokes. That's not to say a girl or woman won't enjoy it, but just be knowledgeable about the target audience. Where
the show stumbles, though, are the action scenes, which could've been fleshed out a tad bit more. Don't let that mark down
dissuade you from buying the show, though, because you'd be missing out on one of the funniest and most zany anime of the year.

Gunbuster Review

The directorial debut of acclaimed director Hideaki Anno, Gunbuster is a legendary anime fan favorite that casts pretty girls and giant robots into a moving epic of insterstellar naval war. Newly translated and re-mastered in HD 24P format, Gunbuster has never before been available on DVD in North America...until now!

2015: Earth's first faster-than-light ship, the Luxion, is lost, attacked by unidentified space monsters in the Perseus Arm. Six years later, Noriko Takaya, daughter of the Luxion's commander, enters the Okinawa girls' Space Pilot High School, vowing to be a pilot and follow her father's trail to the stars. But is she prepared for the intense training to become a member of the elite Top Squadron? Noriko's fight has just begun-and the fate of all humanity depends on her meeting the challenge!

It's hard to believe that it's been nearly 20 years when I first discovered "Gunbuster", the awesome mecha anime that has won the hearts for anime fans since its first release back in 1988.

The year was 1992 and I discovered this awesome series through an anime club meeting and I was just enamored by the series so much that I purchased the English subtitled VHS videos which contained two episodes for like through Books Nippan. In fact, when the VHS was re-released in 1996 by another company, I had to buy that because the video tapes have been viewed too many times and started to lose its quality.

It's really interesting how many people I converted to anime fans through letting them borrow my video tapes. "Gunbuster" is one of the few rare series you will find where each episode is well written, gripping and you just can't stop after one episode. You just want to watch the whole series completely throughout.

What I really enjoyed is how the OAV series fluctuated between parodying other anime but also its attention to light speed travel, black holes and warp factor.

Of course, back in the 90's, not only did you have a knock out punch with beautiful animation, a well written storyline but you also had the top voice actresses from a popular anime series that was so big among American anime fans at that time. You had Hidaka Noriko as the main character Takaya Noriko (note: Hidaka is known for the voice talent of Akane from "Ranma 1/2), Sakuma Rei as Amano Kazumi (note: Sakuma was the voice talent of "Ranma 1/2" character Shampoo) and then you had the "Active Heart" theme song by then-pop idol Sakai Noriko.

The series would feature a lot of references and then at the end of each episode, fans were treated with "Science Lesson" episodes featuring chibi versions of the characters featuring even more references.

But as much as the anime references to other anime and scientists, "Gunbuster" also worked as a fun parody with its use of the title "Gunbuster! Top o Nerae" (Aim for the Top) which is a parody of the anime and manga tennis series "Ace wo Nerae!" and the hugely popular Western film "Top Gun".

Of course we know that director Hideaki Anno went on to be known for his creation of "Neon Genesis Evangelion" and the "Science Lessons" director Tsurumaki Kazuya went on to direct "FLCL" and "Gunbuster 2".

Here we are 20 years since the original OAV's were released in Japan, six episodes all on DVD featuring Noriko as she pushes herself to become a formidable pilot, watching her as the weak girl who would cry a lot but push herself and train herself to become one of the best pilots from the squadron.

There is so much to love about the anime, not just about the oh-so-good feeling of an underdog showing everyone that she can do it and accomplish things and prove them wrong but also how science is used in this series. Each time they go light speed into space, each minute that goes by, three months has gone by in Earth.

So, what could be complex is actually well written and explained in the anime series as each time Noriko arrives back to Earth, her schoolmates are much older than her and have children.

I guess you can say that with each episode, you get much more than what you would expect. That's how I felt about "Gunbuster". Fulfilled, excited about the next episode and wanting more.

Also, for the guys wanting a little "H", "Gunbuster" does have it's share of nudity scenes.

As for the DVD, inside the box, you will find a folding case with three DVD's featuring artwork of the cast of "Gunbuster" and the "Gunbuster" mech itself.

Also included is a booklet featuring character information, "Gunbuster" Gainax behind-the-scenes information plus information on each episode

The episodes are presented in its full aspect ratio with the final episode being black and white and letterboxed. The animation looks awesome even for it being 20-years-old, I really enjoyed how this anime was remastered.

The sound is offered in Linear PCM 2.0 which is a higher bit rate for audio.

There is no English dub, all vocals are Japanese and for subtitles, you can choose to have it on or off or on with the signs translated as well.

The menus are clean with selections of each episode (two episodes per disc) and the Science Lesson Chapters.

As for extra features, there are a few.

Disc 1 features "Good Morning OGH!" which was the promotional trailer produced back in July 1988. This is featured in 2ch, 5.1ch and 5.1ch (dialogue off). There is a quic intro explanation how the trailers were saved on to a VHS tape to a super hi-8 tape and thus the quality is not great. But you start to see how the quality between the DVD versus a promo tape are.

Disc 2 features "Cosmic Battle Space" in 2ch or 5.1ch which features another perspective (from episode 4) of the fight between the squadron and the alien monsters.

Disc 3 features the "Sizzler Project" in 2ch or 5.1ch. This is a promotional trailer produced in 1989 and actually features character Jung Freud learning about the new Gunbuster mechas being created. This was very interesting to see and similar to the first promotional trailer.

"Gunbuster" has remained one of my top 3 anime that I will forever treasure in my heart. It's a series that shows guts, determination, happiness, sadness. It's literally an emotional rollercoaster that has made me smile, cry...

It's well written, features really awesome scenes and interaction between the characters. Well-acted, well-animated and just one of those rare treasures that have come along that you just don't see as much these days from a lot of anime.

Especially with a storyline managed to be complete in six episodes, I'm impressed.

I know that there is a region 0 disc that was released with a fourth disc that featured a rough episode five and unmatted episode six with a few other features but sure, as much as it would have been nice to have that in the US release, I'm not actually losing sleep over it either.

For a great price, you get all six episodes on DVD. For the boxset is the price I paid for one VHS back then. And I know for dub fans who don't like to read subtitles, it's going to be hard to recommend it to you to begin with.

But if you want quality anime that still looks very cool now as it did 20 years ago and also to watch one of the best, well written sci-fi/mecha anime OAV series ever released, then definitely check out "GUNBUSTER".

I highly recommend the "Gunbuster" anime DVD box set. You won't regret it.

Gunbuster Overview

The directorial debut of acclaimed creator Hideaki Anno, GUNBUSTER is a legendary anime fan favorite that casts pretty girls and giant robots into a moving epic of interstellar naval war. Noriko's fight has just begun and the fate of all humanity depends on her meeting the challenge!

Gunbuster Specifications

The OAV Gunbuster (a.k.a. "Aim for the Top") proved so popular it spawned a manga series, the sequel Diebuster (2004) and a theatrical feature (2006). When she was a child, Noriko Takaya's father was killed in humanity's first encounter with aliens from the core of the galaxy. Her desire to follow him into space leads Noriko to the Okinawa Girls' Space Pilot High School, where she meets her future partner Kazumi Amano and Coach Koichiro Ohta. Noriko displays little aptitude for steering mecha, but Ohta sees the potential beneath the maladroit exterior. Soon Noriko is in space, piloting the experimental robot-suit Gunbuster and fighting aliens who look like the monsters in Gahan Wilson cartoons. Gunbuster plays like a mixture of Patlabor, Star Wars, and Robotech, with a generous helping of fan service nudity. In the intervening years, Noriko's mixture of weepy ineptitude and I'll-do-my-best fire has become an anime archetype. And there's simply too much story for a six-part OAV: characters appear and disappear with little effect.

Gunbuster has received a great deal of attention because it marked the first commercial success from the fledgling Gainax studio and the directorial debut of Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno. It's hard to see much foreshadowing of Anno's later brilliance, except for the dramatic use of a black and white palate and still artwork in the last episode, set 12,000 years in the future. Spreading six episodes with minimal extras over three discs seems chintzy, as the material could easily fit on two or even one. (Rated 16 and older: violence, nudity, minor risqué humor) --Charles Solomon

weirdly funny, but sometimes very cool - H. Shamsi -
Do you know those parody anime when they make fun of an old classic anime, well, i think that Gunbuster is the main Target that they aim at.
This 1988, 6 Episode OVA from the Director Anno Hideaki, the man who presented to us NGE is one of the best OVA that i've ever watched, though i couldn't stop laughing here and there for how much classic this anime is.
the story follows Noriko who her father was killed in humanity's first encounter with aliens. being Proud of her father Noriko decided to be a space pilot herself, for that, she joins Okinawa Girls' Space Pilot High School, unfortunately Noriko is just a klutz young girl who is one of the worst pilots in the school, but when Koichiro Ohta a new couch arrives, he sets his eyes on her out of all the students and he puts her together with Kazumi Amano the best mecha pilot in the school, and there Noriko's journey to space starts.
what i really liked about this OVA was the good implementation of the space theories, like the speed of light and the time dimension factor and how those have effected the characters and the story development. that helped us see the change on earth over the years from the eyes of the characters.
the characters themselves were memorable, even thought Noriko was so annoying in the begging, she managed to get so much experience that made her develop remarkably making her fit to be a the pilot of the great mecha gunbuster, and while noriko was going foreword we saw the other character Amano being bushed back by her emotion that she was hiding at the begging and which made her a cool character at the time, but still she was a great character herself.
the music for this OVA was just great, i loved that sound track that comes with the gunbuster seances making the fight much more exciting, and that Inazuma (lighting) kick, even thought it was funny at the beginning, it was just plain cool later on.
the Art for it's time was nice, i'm still not that much into the characters design, but it was still classic, what i really hated was the last Ep Black and White panel thing, after 12,000 year people will think that the animation should be more the better, but using black and white coloring was annoying, they say it's artistic and unique, but still it was annoying, if i wanted to watch something in black and white, i would put my sunglasses on, but still, that what makes out Gainax, they always don't disappoint you to be disappointed in the end of anything they make, i'v got used to it, but that doesn't change that this OVA was the best for me so far, even from Gainax.

Video Quality - A. Stokes - MN
This is not a review of the show but of this DVD release. Bandai Visual USA essentially put zero effort into this "remastered" three disc-set.

There is a thick white line that always runs down the entire left side of the frame and there's a thin white line that sometimes runs down the right side of the frame. There's constant video noise that mars the image (not film grain, mind you, just video noise). Worst of all is the near constant frame judder. The video jumps constantly and almost never stops moving. It's extraordinarily distracting.

To sum it up, this release has the quality of a bootleg at best - only it's priced ridiculously high instead. What a waste of money.

Did I miss something? - Sun Wukong -
After many recommendations from friends, and reading universal praise, I went into the "classic" 6 episode series with high hopes - hopes that developed leprosy and collapsed under the weight of their dead, jaundiced flesh by the end.

Gunbuster is wrought with 2D characterization, uninspired designs, awkward fan-service, and a hilariously incomprehensible plot - and not incomprehensible in an entertaining, mysterious sense - but in a pissed out sort of way that's explained in an embarrassing, 30 second, expository excretion. Anyone who says this show has depth must be weighed down by nostalgia for it, because I simply can't understand any other reason for it being praised. It boggles my mind. And if anyone recommends it with a disclaimer about it being made in the 80s, don't trust them - age does not excuse quality.

But does Gunbuster have redeeming qualities? Of course - it's very well animated. The drama with characters aging in space is novel. And...uh...hmm...sorry, I just remembered how tedious and head-punchingly bad this show was.

If I was forced to recommend this series, I would only for those who are interested in its historical value, to be watched more as research than entertainment. I would explain my reasoning further, but this brief moment of nerd-rage has subsided - and the less time spent with Gunbuster, the better.

Check Out Handy Manny - Tooling Around for $9.80

Handy Manny - Tooling Around Review

My grandson started first hearing the sounds from Handy Manny on the TV. He was fussy at a month old and as soon as Handy Manny came on, he quieted down immediately!. Now Mom is taping the show on TV and he is fixed to it. This new character is fantastic, and soothing to children. The music is great and the colors are bright and attracting to young children. I don't believe putting a child in front of the TV, but he did it all by himself..now he is 6 months and still stops dead while playing on the floor as soon as Handy Manny comes on!!!

Handy Manny - Tooling Around Overview

Manny Garcia is the best handyman in the town of Sheet Rock Hills, in fact he's the best handyman in the whole tri-county Wood Valley region! Like any handyman, Manny depends on his tools. And Manny's tools are a noisy, fussy, bickering bunch that make life for Manny a little hectic! But with each job, Manny and his tools learn valuable lessons about teamwork, friendship and community. Manny's motto "You break it, we fix it!"

Handy Manny - Tooling Around Specifications

Kids who can't get enough of Bob the Builder should also enjoy Handy Manny. Manny Garcia (voiced by Wilmer Valderrama, That '70s Show) is a genial handyman in the town of Sheetrock Hills who--with the assistance of his talking tools, which range from a workaholic pair of pliers to an anxiety-prone monkey wrench--helps his friends and neighbors keep their homes and businesses in good repair. Each of the five episodes included on Tooling Around has a simple moral lesson related to using the right tool for the right job (emphasizing that everyone has something special about them) and the importance of working together. Meanwhile, the candy store owner next door provides examples of the bad consequences of trying to do too much by yourself. The stories and dialogue are simple but colorful and kids may end up singing the short but peppy songs nonstop. Also included on Tooling Around is a simple game that cultivates memory skills as kids try to remember where the appropriate tools are located in Manny's workshop. --Bret Fetzer

Check Out Robotech - The Macross Saga - Complete Collection for $39.99

Robotech - The Macross Saga - Complete Collection Review

When I first saw Robotech I was enthralled from beginning to end. That was a few years ago. When I saw this complete collection of the Macross Saga I knew I had to own it, and I'm glad to say that it was even better the second time around. The themes and ideas of Robotech are still important, maybe even more now than ever, not to mention it has some of the best storyline I've ever seen, and of course, it all comes together in a great sci-fi package that looks as cool as anything we still have today. The animation is old, but the story is true to this day. I'd give it a 10/5 if I could, probably even higher.

Robotech - The Macross Saga - Complete Collection Overview

Producers at Harmony Gold combined the series Super Dimension Fortress: Macross, Genesis Climber Mospeada, and Super-dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross to create a sprawling space opera with a new plot: Robotech (1985), which helped to build an audience for anime in the U.S. The story begins in 1999, when a gigantic spaceship strikes the Earth. Ten years later, Earth forces relaunch the ship as the alien Zentraedi attack, hoping to recapture it. The seesaw warfare is played against a vague romantic triangle involving brash pilot Rick Hunter, straight-laced officer Lisa Hayes, and aspiring singer Minmei. The Zentraedi have somehow lost the secret of biological reproduction, but the two races are virtually identical biochemically. The similarity is sealed by the marriage of Earth pilot Max and Zentraedi spy Miriya. Minmei's performances become a key element in the ongoing war, as the Zentraedi consider her bubblegum pop songs a form of "psychological assault." (They have a point.) Although humanity emerges victorious, much of the Earth is devastated. Lisa and Rick discover their true feelings as the new threat of the Robotech Masters appears--which leads into the second continuity. Gen-X-ers who grew up on Robotech will delight in retracing the coy romances and crude space battles; viewers accustomed to the faster pacing, snazzier effects, and more dramatic conflicts of more recent anime will grow impatient with the endless shilly-shallying. It's a classic of sorts. (Suitable for all ages; appropriate for ages 8 and up: mild violence restricted to spaceship and robot battles) --Charles Solomon

Good action but miss things. - I Love Yahweh Yeshua Christ! - Brooklyn, New York
I have to say first that I love Superman for he is my childhood SuperHero. I personally like this movie that is why I gave it four stars. Second I Think that is could have been better though and I think that is could have been more similar to the Superman Comics. I would have love to see Supergirl in it any case I do recommend this video for rent and/or Buy. I love you Superman!

Misses the mark - S. Davis - Grinnell, IA USA
I bought this flick not expecting to have a recreation of the Death of Superman story from the comics, but at the very least expecting a good film. I got neither.

The animation overall is decent. Quite similar to the Justice League style if you're familiar with that. However, some of the changes to the faces of the characters are rather distracting and quite frankly, ugly.

My real beef with the film is the story. It seems very disjointed. I have no problem with them not sticking to what happened in the comics very closely, but what they replace it with is far far worse. After the first act (which is the best act, containing the fight with Doomsday which is fantastic) I quickly lost interest and wanted to turn it off. I held out hoping the last act would redeem the film, it doesn't in any way.

A Renter - DC_Fan_52 - Texas
My favorite comic book storyline ever has to be "The Death and Return of Superman Trilogy," so when DC announced they were going to adapt the story into their first Direct to DVD feature, I was optimistic. The reality is, it never had a real chance at being an accurate representation of The Death and Return of Superman, it would take an entire 26 episode season of Justice League to present the story correctly, there's no way a 72-minute DVD was going to do it justice. The end result is an overall forgettable Superman experience.

The main feature itself isn't bad, it's just incredibly average. As they point out in the commentary, this isn't much different than what they could get away with on Justice League. They made a great rendition of Superman's initial battle with Doomsday, but the real heart of the Death and Return of Superman Trilogy is really boiled down. What made the original story so remarkable was the impact Superman's death had on the world around him, other superheroes, and his closest friends and family. Here, we just get Lois and Jimmy. So, it's very quick, and that takes the weight from the story. In the source material, it feels like Superman is dead for three months, the movie makes it seem like he was dead for three days.

Let me be clear, it's still a decent narrative, despite not measuring up to the graphic novel. The animation is very similar to the normal Bruce Timm style, all except for Superman's distracting cheekbones, and the fight with Doomsday looks great.

So, it's only a 3 out of 5.

But, you know what makes it really worth owning? (At least for guys like me.) This contains a special documentary called, "Requiem and Rebirth: Superman Lives!" a behind the scenes look at the creation of the original Death and Return of Superman Trilogy. It's great, I've watched it more times than I've watched the movie.

So, if you're looking for a superhero fix, this one's worth a rent. For those of us that liked the graphic novel, then the Documentary is worth watching at least once.

Tom and Jerry - The Movie Review

I like Tom and Jerry the Movie, but some people think that this movie is good, but not great that some folks say that Tom and Jerry shouldn't talk. Tom and Jerry never talk but why do they only talk in Tom and Jerry the Movie?

In the cartoon series, Tom and Jerry didn't talk.
Tom and Jerry only talk in Tom and Jerry the Movie.

What do like better as a Tom and Jerry fan? the cartoon series when they don't talk or T&J the Movie when they talk?

Tom and Jerry - The Movie Overview

Tom and Jerry return to the silver screen in a magical, music-filled extravaganza! The celebrated cat-and-mouse team meet Robyn Starling, a runaway who desperately needs their help to find her missing father. Despite heroic efforts, Tom and Jerry are captured by Robyn's nasty Aunt Figg and her lawyer Lickboot, then tossed into pet prison by the villainous Dr. Applecheeks. Tom and Jerry brilliantly mastermind a great escape and free their new friends, Puggsy and Frankie Da Flea. Together with Robyn, they set off on a wild cat-and-mouse escapade, full of thrills and adventure like you've never seen.

Tom and Jerry - The Movie Specifications

Too bad this theatrical paws you in from the first frame with clever characters, memorable music, and a pulled-together plot, because if you're a dyed-in-the-fur Tom and Jerry fan, your first inclination is to flee the set. Offending old-schoolers in a late-Bewitched new-Darren sense is the dialogue--not only do Tom and Jerry speak, they're talking to each other. Worse, the former combatants cultivate a camaraderie. Instead of clobbering each other with mallets, the cat and mouse duo dig in, together, to rescue a runaway. Returning Robyn to her dad requires outfoxing Aunt Figg, the girl's money-grubbing guardian, and a cadre of scheming animal and kid catchers. A little tail-twitching mousetrap action toward the end is the tender vittle tossed to the old crowd in what's otherwise a declawed but undeniably entertaining chase-a-thon. Put it on for kids 4 and up and help forge a kinder, gentler Tom and Jerry generation. --Tammy La Gorce

If your kids like Tom and Jerry, DON'T GET THIS MOVIE! - K. L. Hawkins - Maryland
This isn't Tom and Jerry. It's a sad imitation of 101 Dalmations - the old, evil version - and NOT a good one.

Why does everyone hate this movie? Because they are expecting Tom and Jerry. My kids LOVE Tom and Jerry - you know, the cat and the mouse who chase each other around and DON'T TALK?

This is a movie about Tom and Jerry's evil twins, who both speak and sing together - and an orphaned little girl who is treated worse than Cinderell by her extraordinarily wicked aunt, and a dogcatcher who not only can't sing, but is evil, too. Not only is there no cat-mouse action in this movie after the first ten minutes, but the duo takes a back seat to a god-awful story that can only be described as very poor Disney imitation. VERy poor. The kind of poor that makes me sorry to use Disney's good name in this review.

If your kids like Tom and Jerry, RUN from this movie. Get the old ones - there are plenty to watch without ever having to sit through this dribble. This is the worst kids movie I've ever seen.

Check Out Dreamscape (Special Edition) [Blu-ray] for $6.49

Dreamscape (Special Edition) [Blu-ray] Review

A preposterous but very fun film from the mid-80s, with great casting, quick pacing, above-average dialogue and a solid plot that weaves together some very imaginative ideas. Don't know what Dr. Freud would think of this band of Dream Psychologists, and things get a little silly once it the film comes full circle with its psuedo-scientific premises...but it all works in a Twilight Zone kind of way. That is to say - despite the incredible suspension of disbelief required, or perhaps because of it, the dark and cautionary messages of the film are nested in pure escapism.

Brainstorm is a similar film, but that one gets way too preachy and turns idiotic in the last half. The Dead Zone is a totally different tone which takes its subject more seriously and has more to say about the responsibilities of those who have "gifts". Dreamscape, although it is by far the most goofy, makes equally good points and is a hell of a lot more fun than either of the other two. Also included is the requisite mid-80s romance with the future Mrs. Spielberg, who thankfully doesn't have to either sing or scream in this outing.

Dreamscape (Special Edition) [Blu-ray] Overview

The President of the United States is about to be assassinated in a dream where there is no morning after. Only one man can save him--a man who must plunge himself into the President's horrendous nightmare. Dennis Quaid stars as Alex Gardner, a psychically gifted young man recruited to help Dr. Paul Novotny (Max Von Sydow) and the beautiful Dr. Jane DeVries (Kate Capshaw) in an experiment to help patients disturbed by menacing nocturnal illusions. But corrupt high-ranking government official Bob Blair (Christopher Plummer) has darker plans for Alex's unusual powers. Soon Alex is propelled inside the President's nightmare, a frightening wasteland of nuclear holocaust, and locked in a fantastic battle that could only happen in a dream. This action-packed science fiction adventure will excite and thrill you with its unusual journey through the mind's most terrifying recesses.

Dreamscape (Special Edition) [Blu-ray] Specifications

Alex Gardner (Dennis Quaid) is a talented young psychic who's frittering his gifts away betting on the ponies. That is, until he's coerced by his old pal and mentor Dr. Paul Novotny (Max von Sydow) into taking part in a dream research project in which his psychic abilities make him indispensable. The project concerns "dreamlinking," whereby talented individuals like Alex hook up via electrodes and project themselves into some troubled subject's nightmares, in which they not only observe but participate in the dream, hopefully effecting some remedy. Alex is by nature a feckless guy, a charismatic scoundrel sporting a Cheshire cat's grin. But he warms easily to his new role as dream-dwelling psychotherapist, having a core of decency. Not so his nemesis, Tommy Ray Glatman (David Patrick Kelly), a dreamlink prodigy and pawn of Bob Blair (Christopher Plummer), who runs the research project for the government (he's described as the "head of covert intelligence"). Blair is worried about the President (Eddie Albert), whose nightmares of nuclear holocaust cause him to escalate disarmament talks with the Russians, much to Blair's dismay, being your basic evil, slick, smarmy covert kind of guy. Turns out Blair's real aim is to use the project to train dreamlink assassins, his star pupil being psycho Tommy Ray and his test case the President. Only Alex is there to stop them.

Dreamscape is all business, with a well-structured screenplay that lays the groundwork for the film's many admirable performances. Kate Capshaw in particular is very dreamy as a research scientist and Dennis Quaid's love interest. And David Patrick Kelly is likely to become your worst nightmare, especially when he's the Snakeman, giving an often fantastical performance. But what you're most likely to remember from this wonderful thriller is the many vivid dream sequences, aptly surreal images from the troubled psyche. --Jim Gay

Found it At Last - Molly Littlefoot - Oshkosh, Wisconsin USA
We used to have this one VHS and the tape broke ::wibble:: I have been looking for it on DVD for years. It's A Sci-Fi/Fantasy with Dennis Quaid (who we both had teen crushes on) and Max von Sydow an accomplished actor who run a project on getting into people's dreams. Christopher Plummer gets to be the governmental bad guy just "trying" to protect Eddie Albert who is the country's President but who really wants the position for himself after the president decides to take the Russians up on the SALT talks (yep this was waaay back in the 80's).
One watches it and laughs at the huge computers but the story is still good and we both still loved it as much as we did when we saw it in the theater.

Blu Ray Version Is A Rip Off - William D. Foster Jr. - Carolina Beach, NC, USA
I am disgusted that companies can market a movie as a blu ray which implies enhanced sound and picture only to provide you with an unaltered straight from DVD transfer. While the sound was on par with standard DVD audio the picture was horrible. The movie had all the little white static-like spots in every frame as if you were watching a high school reel projector movie. It was VHS quality visuals. Nothing is touched up visually from the original movie. The green screen scenes are obvious. And with barely 5 minutes of extras, most of which are still photos, this can hardly be considered a "special edition" of anything.

Image Entertainment has made a name for themselves releasing IMAX and concert blu rays. Reviews of those discs have me scratching my head as to why they would release "Dreamscape" on blu ray at all when they enhance other films for the blu ray upgrade. It is apparent to me this movie came out to capitalize on the upcoming blu ray release of "A Nightmare On Elm Street" which shares some similar themes.

Do not buy this blu ray. You can purchase the "Special Edition" DVD release here on amazon.com for .99 or this movie shows up in the Walmart bin from time to time. There is no difference in the quality of the DVD and blu ray releases except for the price. Someone should prevent these companies from releasing "fake" blu rays at once. And amazon.com should pull this release from their site before someone else makes the same mistake I did and purchases this "fake" blu ray.

Scooby-Doo Goes Hollywood Review

Scooby-Doo is one of my favourite cartoon characters, but I can't say the same about his cartoons. This feature-length animated film breaks that mould. It's a treat both visually and theme-wise. Scooby already is a big star thanks to his Saturday morning cartoon show, which is loved near and far. Yet he harbours a dream of becoming a big primetime star in Hollywood. With Shaggy as his manager, Scooby steps into show business and tries to impress a producer with some hilarious preview clips showing Scooby's versatility. Yet is fame and fortune all that it's cracked up to be? Perhaps people need Scooby-Doo more than he needs Hollywood?

As is the case with animated features, the animation is allowed to go further here. The movie's highlights are the preview clips Scooby and Shaggy present to the producer, including parodies of the likes of Charlie's Angels, Love Boat and Saturday Night Fever (with the catchy song "Gorgeous Scooby-Doo"). My favourite is the last of these, where Scooby dances in an unashamed scene of disco lights that quickly morph into everything from bubbles to dog dishes. All the while, Scooby Doo becomes alive like he rarely does on the cartoon. More touching scenes arise when his friends look through his baby photo book and reminisce about his good old days.

I've been waiting to see something like this ever since I first saw Scooby-Doo. An animated treat of the character a generation fell in love with, and me, that explores his versatility. And for the price, a fan has no excuse to pass it up. Great find.

Scooby-Doo Goes Hollywood Specifications

The only mystery here is whether Scoob will leave the Mystery Machine gang to go solo. Featuring a laugh track, some musical numbers (!), and the Great Dane hanging with such '70s icons as Charlie's Angels and a disco queen in Qiana, the framing for this 49-minute show is framed as a screen test for a show- biz heavyweight. Shaggy plays agent while his canine sidekick gets to play cowboy for a face-off at high noon and don a leather jacket to wow the ladies as a canine Fonz in "Scooby Days." This leaves Fred, Daphne, and Velma with frighteningly little to do. Originally a television special in 1979, this third--or so-- incarnation of Scooby-Doo and friends features the original series' voices (Casey Kasem, etc.), except for Velma (here voiced by Pat Stevens). Young Scooby fans (3 and up) will enjoy the humor, but Scooby purists will want to stick with the mysteries. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Good but not typical Scooby - S. Coyle - Brewster, NY USA
I liked it because I like all Scooby but it is not typical of the Scooby theme. No mystery to solve. Really is about Scooby trying to start a movie career in Hollywood. Kind of stupid theme but cute.

scooby doo goes hollywood - Misty L. Painter - Westfield,Pa Usa
I know that my daughter will like this, because she has this on vhs and now she wants all of her scooby doos that are on vhs now on dvd's.

Please skip this one, you'll thank me - Sonar - Iowa
In order to watch this, one must be strapped to a chair with eyes taped open. It's that bad. I'm a fan of Scooby, but this was easily the worst of the bunch I've seen. The story is plodding, the jokes aren't funny, I spent most of the time looking at the clock waiting for it to be over, and the nicest thing I can say about it is that it ended. It's essentially all about how Scooby doesn't fit well in any other Hollywood role but that of crime-fighter with the gang. If you are looking for a good Scooby movie to enjoy, avoid this one and The Reluctant Werewolf. Try Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island; it's a bit scarier than the average Scooby, but the kids love it and you won't need to be duct taped to your recliner to watch it.

Check Out Avatar The Last Airbender: The Complete Book 1 (Collector's Edition) for $25.49

Avatar The Last Airbender: The Complete Book 1 (Collector's Edition) Review

Let me start off by saying this is one of my favorite shows that has ever aired on TV. Avatar the Last Airbender has been a great show from start to finish, and the producers knew when to end it and not continue after. The first season introduces us to the world of Avatar and its main characters, and is suggested for people new to Avatar to start with book one. I could go on praising the TV show, but plenty of other people have done that.

Now on to the collector's edition of this box set. Truthfully, theres not much more that the collectors edition offers over the original box set. The extra DVD is a very nice feature (worth a watch at least once) and the preview art book is also nice, but not worth the extra purchase if you already have book one on dvd.

Some people have complained about the packaging and the quality of it. I have to say that I love the newer packaging, its how I originally imagined the box sets to look like (They are called book 1,2,3). No, it doesn't look ugly (but it did take me a few minutes to become accustomed to it for some reason), and I love how it looks like a book. The packaging is what really sets this apart from the standard edition (still, not worth an additional purchase if you already own the standard edition, unless you like spending money).

Up until now I had held off buying Avatar box sets, not because I didn't like Avatar, but because they were expensive and I had other series that I wanted to complete the collection. Needless to say, I bought this collector's edition immediately once I found out it existed.

Buying this collector's edition leaves me worried however. I love how the box looks on my dvd shelf, but I want to complete the collection. I want seasons 2 and 3 in collector's edition, just so the boxes look nice together. I want to buy those seasons soon, but not if nickelodeon will be releasing collectors edition.

In short, a great TV show, a great dvd package, but not worth it unless you're a huge Avatar fan or have held off on buying the seasons. And if you do buy it, hope for collector's editions of seasons 2 and 3.

In short

Avatar Season 1 but with a couple nice bonuses - S. Harris - Prattsburgh, New York
This edition of Season 1 of Avatar: The Last Airbender has Season 1 boxset that was previously released in 2006. Although it is missing the paper inside saying what episodes are on what disc but it still comes with the original six discs of the other set if you already have it. While this set comes with a little cardboard to hold the set along with the bonus disc along with a small book with some of the stuff that you can find in the book that was released earlier this month.

I wouldn't recommend getting this if you already have book 1 collection unless you want to get this just for the documentary, while I already had the season 1 set but that can be a nice gift for someone who don't have it. The documentary itself is a half hour long though I felt it could've been maybe a little longer like 45 minutes to try to tell more about what went on with the making of the show. If you don't have Season 1 of this show and wanting to get it, I recommend picking up this set. I give this set 5 stars out of 5.

BEST SHOW EVER!!! - Lover -
This is truly the best animated series you will ever find out there.

It is funny, intense, and mystical.

I highly recommend it!

5 stars for the show, no stars for the "Collector's Edition" - Suzi Hough - San Jose, CA United States
I was really looking forward to getting this Collector's Edition and see what extras were added. I knew it wasn't a lot - just a mini-book and a documentary - but I figured it would be packaged in a cool way.

Wrong.

As others have already mentioned, the Collector's Edition is *literally* the Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Complete Book 1 Collection slipped into another cardboard box, with a little booklet and DVD in an envelope (not even a case!) wedged in. It's really disappointing; it would have been so easy to create a quality Collector's Edition but the studio couldn't be bothered, I guess.
