Naruto Shippuden - The Movie Review

I recently bought Naruto Shippuden- The Movie for my kids and they loved it! There was plenty of action for them and a couple funny moments plus at the end some of their favorite characters show up to help Naruto. You have to watch this movie if you're a big naruto fan. It's about naruto helping this girl {i forgot her name} but she recently had a vision if Naruto was going to live... or die during their mission.
Features Naruto, Sakura, Neji, Lee and the priestess. To know what happens in this adventure or what happens to naruto you have to watch the movie. YOU WILL ENJOY!

Naruto Shippuden - The Movie Overview

A powerful spirit that once threatened to destroy the world is back! Naruto’s mission is to protect a priestess named Shion, who is the only once with the power to seal away the monster. She also has the uncanny ability to predict someone’s fate. Her latest prediction: Naruto will soon die. Naruto's only hope is to abandon Shion, but that’s not Naruto's style. He decides to face her fatal prediction head-on---and die!

Naruto Shippuden - The Movie Specifications

The first of three theatrical features, Naruto Shippuden--the Movie (2007) provides a visually striking, action-packed introduction to the second series of adventures of ninja-in-training Naruto Uzumaki. Sinister ninja use black magic medical jutsu to raise the spirit of the long-imprisoned demon Moryo. If Moryo's body is also resurrected, he will establish a Thousand Year Kingdom that will mean the end of life on Earth as humans know it. Only Shion, the priestess of the Land of Ogres, can stop Moryo by keeping his body sealed within a hidden temple. A special squad from the Village Hidden in the Leaves--Neji, Sakura, Rock Lee, and Naruto--is assigned to protect Shion on her journey there. Director Hajime Kamegaki uses CG to create a terracotta army copied from the celebrated figures from Emperor Qin Shi Huang's tomb in Xian. The scenes of marching clay automatons, impervious to ordinary weapons, pack a real punch, although they don't always blend with the drawn characters. Kamegaki balances these dire threats with plenty of physical comedy: Naruto boasts and blunders and stumbles; Rock Lee defeats his foe after eating a liquor-filled chocolate, re-creating his version of Jackie Chan's "drunken fist" technique in the "Chase for Sasuke" story arc. For Naruto fans, the movie is a must-have. (Rated Teen+ Older Teen, but suitable for ages 12 and older: violence, grotesque imagery, brief nudity, alcohol use) --Charles Solomon

Naruto the Movie - Taylor -
I thought that this movie was awesome! A great movie to start off the Shippuden Series. The batte scenes are impressive, especially Lee's! I love the fact that Shion, the priestess would predict Naruto's death. But the only way to escape her fatal prediction, is to abandon Shion. But that's not the type of thing Naruto would do. I also love how it swears in it, and theres blood. But you don't really see much of that in this movie. But, other then that, this movie is really good. I watch it atleast twice a week, possibly more. I would recommend this to all Naruto Fans out there!

nice to see other ninjas fight - C. Pearson - Tennessee
Nice to see other ninjas fight!

Neji and Lee have been getting the shaft on screen time.

Overall, it is the best naruto movie I have seen. If you are a fan of Neji or Lee, might be the only was to see them both fight out side of the gaara arc.

It's a Naruto Movie - Charles Stuckey - Florida
Like most of the Naruto movies, this one is a mini-story that's basically an extended episode. While good to watch from a Naruto fan standpoint, also like most of the movies it has little relevance to the plot of the series and follows a formulaic plotline. It's as good as most of the movies.

Pocahontas (Disney Gold Classic Collection) Review

After watching the old vhs version of Pocahontas for the first time yesterday, I was somewhat ambivalent about the film. Reading the reviews, however, I realize that Pocahontas has done something remarkable, especially for a "cartoon": it has made Americans discuss serious aspects of our history with each other. I can remember the excitement when Pocahontas came out, that Disney had finally created a non-white heroine. I think we can still feel the ripples of that excitement today, as we talk about the difference between history and legend, who the Native Americans were and are, and the implications of these questions for people living today.
As for historical accuracy, a person would have to be confused to go to a Disney movie thinking they would see "history" on the screen. Pocahontas is a legend, and Disney has, as usual, created its own version of that legend. On the surface, the movie is just a love story between two people of different cultures. Still, the conflict between Indians and white "settlers" depicted in this film gives some indication of the historical expectations of both groups, and of what happened as a result of that. We can't expect a Disney movie to deal with the genocide that followed.
The character of Pocahontas that Disney created is so powerful that she overshadows everything else in the film. This is not a cute cardboard cutout, but a grown-up, majestic woman who should be an inspiration to everyone who watches the movie. The John Smith character is not quite the same quality, but he is an admirable nonetheless. Smith is eager to explore the New World and willing to forge a relationship with someone he previously considered a "savage," and even remains silent when the natives accuse him of killing one of their warriors. But he cannot equal Pocahontas's noble gesture of protecting Smith with her own body and telling her father that he will have to kill her if he's going to kill the white man. This is powerful stuff.
Underlying the love story is the message of honoring the earth, beautifully captured in the song "Colors of the Wind." In Pocahontas, Disney's artists have made nature come alive, from the majestic rivers and mountains to Pocahontas's delightful friends Meeko and Flit. In color and sound, it is a gorgeous film.
To sum up, everyone should see this beautiful movie. Far more than just entertaining you, it will make you think seriously about who we are as Americans, as well as how we treat the planet we all have to share.

Pocahontas (Disney Gold Classic Collection) Overview

Disney's take on this historical confrontation between European settlers and Native Americans follows the paths of two future lovers. One is British adventurer John Smith, who travels the Atlantic with the Virginia Company to establish Jamestown. On the shore is Pocahontas, a typical Disney heroine: bright, beautiful, mischievous, and motherless. The two meet in the untamed wilds of America (the first meeting is quite divine), fall in love, and try to ward off the warring factions. It's Disney's version of a Native American West Side Story. Two Disney trademarks do not quite muster up: the villain isn't hissable and the score's only high point is the Oscar-winning "Colors of the Wind." Calling it "historical" is a stretch, but Disney created a very natural look at the two cultures. The Native American characters are handled especially well, and kids should be intrigued by their world; the movie is a far different lesson from the one their parents and grandparents learned. Disney has discovered a few things, though: you don't have to kill to solve your problems, and you can end the film without a happily-ever-after, illustrated by a touching final visual. Everything was great! - SieJurgens -
Ordered the Pocahontas 10th Anniversary Edition and couldn't be happier with it. It looks brand new, the discs work fine, and it shipped relatively fast. Everything about this purchase was great!

thanks! - Christian E. Taboada - Irvine, CA, US
I bought this product for all the wrong reasons, for a boy, but even since he didn't work out, I have the movie and this movie is great! There are random crayola marks all over the cover, but it's cute! thanks!!!

Most underraated Disney film. - V. Nguyen - California
It's hilarious reading the bad reviews about Pocahontas. They either complain that the movie is too mature (it tries too hard to be politically correct, and it is too blatant in its portrayal of violence and racism), or that it is too childish (making a mockery of actual history by portraying it in a cartoon-ish and simplistic manner). So, what is it?

The problem is that people already have too many opinions formed about it before they even watch it. People were already protesting 'Pocahontas' before it was even released way back in 1995! Why judge something before you have seen it? If you watch it with an open mind, you will see that Pocahontas is a wonderful movie with a great message, and that the creators took a lot of care into trying to portray Indian culture in a respectful way. Great music, great animation, great story. Extremely underrated. And one of my favorites. (:

Inuyasha, The Movie 3 - Swords of an Honorable Ruler Review

This is the best of the Inuyasha movies. I just wished they had shown more about the father. Sesshoumaru at the beginning of the movie says he has no need of anybody to protect. He never notices he slowly gathers his folowers(Rin and Jaken) whom he protects for whatever reason. Inuyasha has followers, too. The two sons are just like their father, though neither would ever admit it.
If you are unfamiliar with Inuyasha start with the first movie, which recaps the origin story.

Inuyasha, The Movie 3 - Swords of an Honorable Ruler Overview

Many years ago, the Great Dog Demon wielded the Three Swords of the Fang. Upon his death, he bequeathed a sword to each of his sons, Inuyasha and Sesshomaru, leaving the third sword, the wrath-filled Sounga, locked away forever. Now that the Sounga’s power has been awakened, these two battling brothers must put away their sibling rivalry and face off against a force that spells doom for all mankind!

Inuyasha, The Movie 3 - Swords of an Honorable Ruler Specifications

Swords of an Honorable Ruler is darker and more dramatic than the two previous Inu-Yasha features--or the broadcast series. Inu-Yasha's father Inu no Taisho, the Great Dog Demon, possessed not two but three swords: Tetsusaiga, Tenseiga, and Sounga, which are linked to Earth, Heaven, and Hell, respectively. After the human princess Izayoi gave birth to Inu-Yasha, she was killed by Takemaru, a samurai who loved her from afar. Inu no Taisho died soon after; the sword smith Totosai and Myoga the flea hid the first two swords, according their master's instructions, and sealed away Sounga. Seven centuries later, Sounga has become one of the treasures of the Higurashi family shrine. During what should be an ordinary ritual, Sounga is freed and returns to the past through the Bone Eater's Well. The bloodthirsty spirit of the sword raises the soul of Takemaru and begins a campaign of hideous destruction. Can Inu-Yasha, Kagome, Shippo, Miroku, Sango, and Sesshomaru defeat the sword-ghoul--individually or collectively?

In addition to being more violent than other Inu-Yasha films, Swords of an Honorable Ruler is more lavish, with lots of CG special effects and a score by Kaoru Wada that evokes The Rite of Spring. Director Toshiya Shinohara keeps things movie so briskly, the viewer doesn't have time to miss Naraku, Kikyo, or the Shikon Jewel, although the final battle goes on far too long. The drama and passion of Swords of an Honorable Ruler will delight Inu-Yasha fans. (Rated PG-13: violence, grotesque imagery, minor risqué humor) --Charles Solomon

Inuyasha 3 - Racheile M. Ricklefs - Fl
Very good movie, I did have to return the DVD becasue of scratched and it would not play, but besides that I was able to reorder and correct it very quickly and everything was made very easy!

The third film for the Inuyasha franchise - Lesley Aeschliman - Enumclaw, WA
Swords of an Honorable Ruler is the third of four films in the Inuyasha franchise. During the course of the film, Inuyasha and his brother, Sesshomaru (who hate each other), must team up together in order to defeat the enemy. But can these feuding brothers put aside their rivalry long enough to save the day?

There are seven special features on the DVD. The first is a Line Art Gallery, which is split into two sections: Characters and Settings. There are forty pages of character model sheets under the "Characters" section. The "Settings" section contains thirty-two pages of settings.

The "Special Footage" link is next, and it takes you to a feature that runs a little over twenty-six minutes. This footage recaps some of the important moments in the series that tie in to Inuyasha and Sesshomaru's rivalry.

Next, there are the Japanese trailers for Swords of an Honorable Ruler, with a trailer for the fourth Inuyasha film included at the end. These run for about five minutes, but they are all in Japanese with no English subtitles. There are also Viz Media trailers, a one screen ad for the Inuyasha graphic novels, a one screen ad for the Inuyasha trading card game, and a preview for the Inuyasha Feudal Combat video game (which looks a lot like Inuyasha characters are put into a game that is played in the same manner as the Street Fighter games).

Overall, Swords of an Honorable Ruler is an excellent film. The runtime for the film is perfect for the story being told. This DVD should be in the collection of anyone who appreciates the Inuyasha anime series.

It's good.... - Rachel Jonas - Chattanooga, TN United States
It's good if you like InuYasha. There is a small plot hole in the way that Inu-Papa dies, but over all it's a good movie. It shows that Sesshoumaru is starting to have a Grinch moment and his heart is starting to grow. I liked it so much that I went out and bought all the movies in box set.

Sleeping Beauty (Two-Disc Platinum Edition) Overview

Awaken your senses to the majesty of SLEEPING BEAUTY, Walt Disney's classic fairy tale. See more than you've ever seen before through the magic of state-of-the-art technology, and experience this groundbreaking film restored beyond its original brilliance, in the way Walt envisioned it pristine, beautiful, utterly breathtaking. SLEEPING BEAUTY will transform your home into a fantastic world your family will want to experience again and again.

In the original story, Princess Aurora sleeps for 100 years before being awakened by a prince's kiss. In the Disney version, Prince Philip comes to her rescue much sooner.
George Brun's orchestral score, which was nominated for an Academy Award, expertly blended famous themes from Tchaikovsky's ballet.
With a budget that exceeded million in 1959, this was Walt Disney's most lavish and expensive animated feature to date.
Determined to make the characters as realistic as possible, Disney had a live action film shot with actors posing as Sleeping Beauty, the Prince, and Maleficent, for the animators to use.
New York Times critic Bosley Crowther called the fight between Prince Philip and Maleficent the noisiest and scariest go-round he (Disney) has ever put into one of his films.

Sleeping Beauty (Two-Disc Platinum Edition) Specifications

Disney's 1959 animated effort was the studio's most ambitious to date, a widescreen spectacle boasting a gorgeous waltz-filled score adapting Tchaikovsky. In the 14th century, the malevolent Maleficent (not dissimilar to the wicked Queen in Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs taunts a king that his infant Aurora will fatally prick her finger on a spinning wheel before sundown on her 16th birthday. This, of course, would deny her a happily-ever-after with her true love. Things almost but not quite turn out that way, thanks to the assistance of some bubbly, bumbling fairies named Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. It's not really all that much about the title character--how interesting can someone in the middle of a long nap be, anyway? Instead, those fairies carry the day, as well as, of course, good Prince Phillip, whose battle with the malevolent Maleficent in the guise of a dragon has been co-opted by any number of animated films since. See it in its original glory here. And Malificent's castle, filled with warthogs and demonic imps in a macabre dance celebrating their evil ways, manages a certain creepy grandeur. --David Kronke

On the DVD
Sleeping Beauty was the last and most lavish of Walt Disney's animated fairy tales. He told the artists not to hurry and to give him "a moving illustration": The film required almost four and one-half years and one million finished drawings. Instead of the 19th century storybook illustrations that had influenced the look of Snow White and Pinocchio, the artists adapted the flattened perspective and jewel-like colors of 15th century French illuminated manuscripts. The results remain unmatched for sheer visual opulence. However, Sleeping Beauty suffers from a weak story: the vision of an ageless princess slumbering in a vine-shrouded tower was replaced with elements of Snow White and a boy-meets-girl musical. The evil Maleficent and the three Good Fairies (Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather) dominate the film, rather than Princess Aurora and Prince Philip. Sleeping Beauty was originally released in 70mm, and the Blu-ray edition restores the film to its original splendor. (Many earlier releases trimmed the wide-screen images and/or muted the glowing palatte.) The Bonus DVD looks good on a flat screen monitor, but it pales in comparison to the richness of the Blu-ray. In addition to the commentaries and a making-of documentary, the set includes myriad extras that vary widely in quality. Nostalgia buffs will enjoy the recreation of the old Sleeping Beauty's Castle attraction in Disneyland, and the TV program "Four Artists Paint One Tree" provides a welcome showcase for key talents from the film. But the CG animation of the dragon and the voice imitations of the Good Fairies fail to capture the magic of the originals in the "Dragon Encounter"; the "Maleficent's Challenge Game"--a hi-tech Twenty Questions--sounds only vaguely like the redoubtable sorceress. (Rated G: violence) --Charles Solomon

Quality transfer ruined by ads, design - Tec - Detroit, MI
This is easily the worst disc we have ever watched. Not because of the movie itself, which is a faithful - even gorgeous - transfer. But in the battle to get to see it.

First off, this disc includes TEN ads in the beginning! Fortunately, depending your player you can chapter skip, and so I did. Over, and over, and over. And then the screen went black, and I had to do it all again. It took almost 5 minutes just to GET to the movie!

Second, and perhaps worse, is the disc doesn't play for 2-3 minutes even when you DO get to the movie! This isn't a mistake, it actually warns you of this as the disc starts. And true to it's word, it just goes black for so long you think it's broken. If you get to the point of the disc playing, you literally have time to go make yourself a snack!

Combined, these 'features' are so infuriating that they cast a dark pall over the entire movie that never really went away. The best word to describe it is 'abusive.' I think Walt would roll in his grave if he knew how miserable an experience Disney has wrapped around and in front of his classic.

Sleeping Beauty - Nicole B. Handren - Bangor, Maine United States
I was very impressed with the quality of the video and how fast it arrived. It arrived way before the appointed time. My son was so happy when the package arrived.

Check Out Pete's Dragon (High-Flying Edition) for $10.01

Pete's Dragon (High-Flying Edition) Review

I purchased this video for my niece's birthday. It arrived in perfect condition and within the week. My kids loved it when they were growing up, and I did, too. I especially like the music and animation.Although I haven't viewed it, I am sure it is fine.

Pete's Dragon (High-Flying Edition) Overview

Get ready for a magical adventure filled with friendship, fun and heartwarming songs in the new Special Edition DVD of Walt Disney's classic family film Pete's Dragon, now with dazzling new bonus features! It's a Brazzle Dazzle Day when an orphan named Pete and his best friend, Elliott, an invisible dragon, wander into the seaside village of Passamaquoddy. Although Pete befriends the lighthouse keeper, Nora and her salty old father , the townspeople think he is behind the hilarous accidents that keep happening. But after a daring rescue, everyone believes in Pete's fire breathing buddy. Featuring an all-star cast, Pete's Dragon is a timeless classic every member of your family will love.

Pete's Dragon (High-Flying Edition) Specifications

This story of a winsome orphan and his guardian dragon features an Academy Award-nominated score and song, Helen Reddy's "Candle on the Water." The combination of a live-action story with an animated figure was innovative in 1977, and the green dragon with pink wings will still charm youngsters today. However, its plot has the boy running from a nasty family to whom he's been sold into slavery, as well as an evil magician who tries to steal the dragon for his parts. These dark story lines may scare or bore younger children, who only want to see Elliot the dragon belch fire and give Pete rides on his back. And older children who might appreciate the plot may scoff at the relatively crude animation. This leaves a rather narrow audience window of about ages 3 to 7. A cast of veterans includes Shelley Winters, Mickey Rooney, and Red Buttons, who all turn in the hammiest of performances. Acting newcomer Reddy demonstrates both why her acting career never took off and why her singing career did. (Lines like "You're a bunch of superstitious ding-dongs" don't give her much help.) However, her sometimes awkward performance as the lonely lighthouse keeper who gives the boy a home provides the film with its heart. Bottom line: it's a keeper for diehard Disney fans, dragon lovers, and those who remember this movie fondly from their childhood. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Check Out Maiko Haaaan!!! for $11.98

Maiko Haaaan!!! Review

"Maiko Haaaan!!!" delivers on two levels. Not only is it a highly entertaining screwball love comedy, but it is also one of the most authentic geisha-themed films I have ever seen. People wanting to know more about the Flower and Willow world would do far better watching this than Hollywood fantasies like Memoirs of a Geisha or My Geisha.

Pure over-the-top comedy delivered as only the Japanese can, the story follows four people, Onizuka Kimihiko (Abe Sado), Naito Kiichiro (Tsutsumi Shinichi), Osawa Fujiko (Shibasaki Kou) and Komoko (Koide Saori). Two guys and two girls. As Shakespeare said "the course of true love never did run smooth." An understatement at best.

Tokyo-born Onizuka is obsessed with geisha and maiko (apprentice geisha), and has been ever since he first saw them on a school trip to Kyoto. The only reason he is together with his current girlfriend, Fujiko, is because he believes that she was born in Kyoto. Onizuka also runs a geisha/maiko website, where he is in a constant flame-war with someone who knows the geisha world better than Onizuka ever could. Eventually, Onizuka is transferred to the Kyoto offices of his company (a dream come true!) where he finds that money is not enough to open the closed doors of the geisha. His maniacal quest to gain an introduction begins, as well as his quest to win the love of Komoko, one of the newest maiko to debut. Naito, his rival, one-ups him at every chance.

But this little synopsis doesn't cover even a small portion of the story. Things fly at break-neck speed, as Fujiko comes to Kyoto in order to apprentice as a geisha and win back Onizuka, and meanwhile Onizuka and Naito race each other through challenge after challenge, from professional baseball to blockbuster movies to K-1 Fighting even to being the mayor of Kyoto in an attempt to prove who is the better man and win the top spot in the geisha's world. Everything moves so fast it is hard to keep up, but then there are punctuating moments of calm and silence that puts meaning into the chaotic frenzy.

Abe Sado (Uzumaki, The Great Yokai War) puts all of his energy into Onizuka, and you are either going to love or hate the character. He does nothing but to the extreme, and will crawl over everyone to reach his goals. Shibasaki Kou (Battle Royale, One Missed Call) is really far too lovely to be the rejected girlfriend Fujiko, but that's the way it works in this kind of film. Tsutsumi Shinichi (also of "One Missed Call") is understated and stern, and a perfect foil for Onizuka's antics. The subplot with Naito and Komoko lends a really nice serious undertone for the film

I absolutely loved "Maiko Haaaan!!!" It had great balance as a film, winning performances from all the actors, and of course lots and lots of nice geisha eye-candy.

The DVD has a few bonus features like "The Making of Maiko Haaaan!!!" and Director & Cast Profiles. Some of the subtitles are a little funky, and I felt the translator tried a little bit too hard in spots to transfer the Japanese into "hip English," and it comes off as forced and doesn't carry the same meaning.

Note to the title: "Maiko" is the name for apprentice geisha, and "-han" is the honorific given in the Kyoto dialect, much like "-san" would be for a regular person. Normally, it would be "Maiko-han" but Onizuka never does anything like a regular person.

Maiko Haaaan!!! Overview

From acclaimed screenwriter Kankuro Kudo (Ping Pong, Yaji, Kita: The Midnight Pilgrims and Takashi Miike's Zebraman), comes Maikohaaaan!!!, a colorful introduction to Japan s Maiko world and a slapstick comedy with an energetic twist of Kyoto humor.
The film centers on Japanese office worker Kumihiko Onizuka (Sadao Abe, from Kamikaze Girls), who dumps his girlfriend (Kou Shibasaki) because he believes he can only fall in love with a Maiko (apprentice Geisha). He decides to pursue his dream of courting a real Maiko in Kyoto, but must first overcome the social barriers that prevent him from visiting the private Maiko Houses, as well as a millionaire baseball player rival (Shinichi Tsutsumi). Meanwhile, Kumihiko s girlfriend tries to win him back by leaving Tokyo to become a Maiko herself.

An insanely crazy but fun Japanese film from the wild and creative Kankuro Kubo - Dennis A. Amith (kndy) - California
Japanese comedy madness coming from director Nobuo Mizuta and a wild screenplay by "Ping Pong" and "Go" writer Kankuro Kubo comes one of the wildest comedies to come out in Japan.

The film focuses on ramen loud and obnoxious office worker Kimihiko Onizuka (played by Sadawo Abe), an unusual guy who is obsessed with maiko (geisha-in-training).

When Onizuka was a teenager, during a school trip to the Kansai area, his classmates ditch him and as he was lost in town, he is helped by a Maiko. He eventually realizes how beautiful and helpful these women are that in his mind growing up, he wants his life to be closer to the Kansai
. That means dating women from Kansai and just wanting to move there.

Onizuka now runs a popular Maiko fan website where he and other photographers are just as fanatic as cosplay photographers and compete in getting the best shot. But during one day at work, someone on his website starts flaming him and Onizuka just gets angry and screaming in the workplace.

And thus the workplace demotes him and sends him to the Kansai area, where a lot of the maiko are located and to him, it's a positive move to be closer to the area that he wants to be. But not happy for him is his girlfriend Fujiko (played by popular J-pop singer and actress Kou Shibasaki of "Batttle Royale" and "Dororo" fame). Fujiko is so in love with Onizuka but the only reason why he dated her is because she's from Kansai.

So, Onizuka departs to Kansai and finds out that the people at the office are really not so motivated but that's OK for Onizuka, as long as he can spend some time with his favorite Maiko and thus tries to get in. He realizes that their is a rule established that first-timers are not allowed. They must be introduced by a regular and thus Onizuka is dejected.

Things change for him though as he realizes from a photo from his website that the company president is a regular. Onizuka tries to befriend the president but the president has no desire to introduce this weird person to the maiko establishments he frequents. Unless he can make the company a lot of money.

Thus Onizuka and his Kansai team start developing plans for "Your Ramen", you picked the condiments and combined with kansai-style ramen everything will be fine. And everything is fine as they make tons of money and thus proving himself to the company president.

So, finally Onizuka can now become a regular but unbenownst to Onizuka, his ex-girlfriend in Tokyo has followed him to the Kansai area and knowing her ex's infatuation of maiko, has become a maiko at the same establishment.

During one night with the company president, Onizuka meets famous picture Kiichiro Naito (played by award winning actor Shinichi Tsutsumi), who seems to be a regular and is obnoxious, drunk and always getting into some trouble. But Naito recognizes Onizuka as the webmaster of the Maiko fansite and berates him. Onizuka realizes Naito is the creep flaming him on his website and thus the long battle begins between Onizuka and Naito, as they compete in many types of battles in various industries of who is better than who. From becoming professional baseball players, professional actors, K-1 fighters, politicians and more, Onizuka will do whatever he can to beat Naito.

"Maiko Haaaan!!!" is one of those Japanese films that is a wild comedy. Onizuka's character reminded me of a crazy anime character in which he thinks of himself wild and cool but everyone seems him as wild, obnoxious, perverted and crazy. In fact, it's almost like an anime series that is live. From the dream sequences of Onizuka dancing in a Broadway like performance to the competitions in which Onizuka and Naito try to top each other and just all out crazy.

Suffice to say, I've seen weird films, crazy films but "Maiko Haaaan!" is totally insane!

VIDEO & AUDIO:

The video is presented in 16×9 and one thing that you will love about "Maiko Haaaan!!!" is that their are so many areas where the film is shot. Outdoors in the beach, at a baseball stadium and much more. A lot of color is utilized and really interesting cuts that scream "colorful"! But the impressive part of this film was the audio. I was amazed by how each channel was used for the surround sound. Especially in a segment of the baseball game, hearing the crowd and the noises coming from behind and the dialogue coming from the front. It was very well done!

In fact, the colorful cinematography and the well utilized surround sound definitely enhanced this film's enjoyability.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The DVD comes with the original Japanese trailers, the Viz Picture trailers and one major featurette on "The Making of Maiko Haaaan!!!". In the featurette, we get to see the interviews with the cast, the director and the cast at the movie premiere and an early preview of the premiere to an audience and much more. It's a pretty lengthy featurette and a good insight of how the film was created and more.

Also, the DVD comes with a film location map in Kyoto. In the map are where 14 scenes from the film were shot. So, just in case anyone wants to visit any of the shrines or the shopping areas, the map is actually quite detailed and should be fun for those wanting to visit the area and discover the Heian Shrine, Chion-in Temple, Yasak Shrine, Teramachi District, Daikoku-ya and more.

As a fan of films written by Kakuro Kudo, it's always interesting to see what kind of wild film would come out this man's mind. And "Maiko Haaaan!!!" is just a totally wild and crazy film that, if you're an anime fan and have watched these crazy characters that are just wild, crazy and obnoxious...and even wondered, what if there was a person in real life like that.

Well, Sadawo Abe accomplishes that as the wild and crazy Onizuka. I'm just surprised of how much of these crazy scenes with him are included in this film, to watch him transform from this maiko-loving person to a corporate marketing tycoon, to a professional baseball player, to an actor in samurai film, to a K-1 fighter to a politician, it's pretty insane but in a fun way!

/> Excellent! A word that can describe the Centennial Collection release of the 1961 film

But as crazy as the film is, I did have some problems with the actual plot. Onizuka is just too far out, crazy and it seems the goal was to heighten the character's craziness as the major part of the film. Granted, there is an actual plot and once you feel that the film is about to have some seriousness to it, Onizuka's character just blows it all up with his craziness. Granted, this was all intentional and to show that Onizuka really doesn't care about the women, he just cares that they are "maiko" and his obsession for maiko and besting his rival has really clouded his judgment.

The film stars one of the most highly demanded actresses (and singers) in Japan, Kou Shibasaki (who plays the character of Fujiko, Onizuka's ex-girlfriend). Even when you think that Onizuka will wise up and find out that this woman is for her, his character becomes more like Ataru Moroboshi of "Urusei Yatsura" fame, so blinded by his love for the maiko women and his competition with Naito, he just lives for the moment.

Overall, it's a fun and insanely zany comedy that is truly entertaining but because it's so over-the-top, at times, it's almost like watching Robin Williams and Drew Carey
downing some Red Bull and depending on your mood, you will either be entertained by the film or feel that you had a bit too much of Onizuka's craziness.

As far as the DVD is concerned, film transfer features the colorfulness of the maiko outfits and the overall atmosphere of the Kansai area. But the sound quality and its distribution of sound through the different channels in your home theater was well done. And I'm glad a lengthy featurette for the film and the Kyoto location map was included. Very cool!

All in all, if you are open to insane Japanese comedy humor, definitely give "Maiko Haaaan!!!" a try!

Go Maiko... - Melissa Henstra - Florida
An over the top cofection of a film that had me laughing out loud while simultaneously cringing. Maiko Haaaan!! is the story of Kimihiko Onizuka who's all consuming obssesion with Maiko(Appentice Geisha) directs every aspect of hiis life. He's useless at his job, working in a ramen factory because he spends his time running a Maiko fanpage while having text wars with an unknown person who likes to post insults on Kimihiko's site. He's dating a co-worker, but only because she claims to be from Kyoto the epicenter of Geish culture, and his life's ambition is to spend an evening with a Geisha Playing Yakyuuken(basicly rock-paper-scissors with stripping.) But there is a problem, though Kimihiko has photographed many Geisha he has never so much as set foot in a teahouse(where Geisha entertain.)

All that is about to change though, cause "somtimes life smiles on you." Kimihiko is being transfered/demoted to a ramen topping factory in Kyoto. Believing that his wildest dreams are on the verge of coming true he cheerfully dumps his girlfriend, telling her that he could only ever truly love a Maiko, and heads off to begin a new life as a Geisha patron.
But it wouldn't be a comedy if getting in with the Geisha where as simple as emptying your bank account and heading off to a teahouse.

Kimihiko needs an in, and it so happens that in is the President of the the company he works for, the president is reluctant, but makes Kimihiko a deal. Find a way to make the failing factory into a cash cow and, in return the key to the city, or in this case the teahouse. Lo and behold it works, Kimihiko is exactly where he's dreamed of being since he was a teenager, and to top it all he's met the Maiko of his dreams. Unfotunately she's got some strange connection to the mysterious web poster, who is the cause of so much aggravtion and happens to also be a Geisha patron The two meet one night face to face, and from then on they become heated rivals determined to out do each other, Kimihiko becomes a baseball player, an actor, a kickboxer, and a polical hopeful all in the name of getting the best of one man. In the midsst of all this is Kimihiko's ex- girlfriend Fujiko who has her own side story, she decieds that the only way to when back her man is to go to Kyoto and become a Maiko herself.
This is a great movie as long as you watch it for what it is a silly slapstick comedy who's only only aim is to get laughs, Maiko Haaaan!! Features alot of Japenese cultural elements and pop culture which it helps to be somwhat formiliar with, otherwise it's easy to get lost and miss a lot of the humor. I really enjoyed this film and also suggest Kamikaze Girls [[ASIN:B0016QCBAY Memories of Matsuko and Sakuran

A great movie if your into random humor - D. Hanley - Brooklyn, NY
The movie is distinctly Japanese, so if your not into Japanese cinema that focuses heavily on the culture, don't bother watching this movie. For those of us who don't mind this, Maiko Haaaan!!!'s humor lies in its seemingly random senarios and the jerky actions of the cast. Its slapstick comedy in its finest. Again, if slapstick isn't your thing, you're not going to enjoy this. For those of you who do, make Maiko Haaaan!!! the top of your to watch this. At the very least this movie deserves a rental.

Check Out Jack & The Beanstalk for $17.30

Jack & The Beanstalk Review

Ever since I viewed this slightly distorted version of "Jack and the Beanstalk" (hereafter JATB 1974) about 32 years ago on TV during Thanksgiving or Christmas on the "SFM Holiday Network" (including the "Monday Night Football" theme song - you know, EEEEEEEE, ta-ta-ta-ta-TA!), it has obsessed my memory. Before I bought and watched the DVD from Amazon, I could only remember bits and pieces from this extended cartoon feature, such as 1) Jack's stalwart bloodhound Crosby singing to the moon ("Crosby, you can talk!"), 2) the eerily weird wedding sequence with Princess Margaret, the giant Tulip, and the magically animated "paper congregation", 3) Tulip toppling some columns while chasing Jack and Margaret, 4) Tulip flicking a swordsman (the general) away with his finger, and 5) Jack's shrewish mother fainting at the sight of Tulip descending the beanstalk after Jack. These images flickered in my mind like a dream. Now, having watched the movie as an adult, some of the eeriness and oppressive atmosphere has diminished, but JATB 1974 is still quite a unique, compelling, and thought-provoking experience.

As other posters have commented, JATB 1974 strongly adheres to the basic plot, except for the inclusion of Crosby, Margaret, and the thoroughly malevolent and devious witch Hecuba, also the purported mother (!) of the brutish Tulip. In another deviation from the basic plot, after doing away with her royal parents, Hecuba has somehow mesmerized Margaret to see beastly Tulip as a beautiful prince so that she can marry him and make Hecuba "Queen of the Clouds". The jazzy, theatrical score permeating the movie is a third difference, prompting me to suggest to Broadway to produce a musical based on JATB 1974. Despite Hecuba's convoluted matrimonial scheme, JATB 1974 respects and fleshes out the classic plot, fully developing at a deliberate but lively pace all the characters and their motivations.

For example, Jack comes across as a boisterous, cheerful, friendly kid, if a bit impulsive, self-absorbed, and naïve (with the bean/cow trade and all). His plump, widowed mother appears as a shrill, harsh termagent, but still grudgingly empathetic since we realize that her bad temper probably arises from destitute circumstances. Crosby the bloodhound initially appears as a lazy dreamer of heroic deeds, but eventually proves himself an invaluable ally and conscience to Jack as he convinces him to accept the responsibility to save the princess from the witch and giant. Princess Margaret evokes our fearful sympathy as we feel sorry for the loss of her parents and pray that Jack can somehow break Hecuba's sinister spell over her. Hecuba makes for a completely seductive but hissable witch who is quite prepared to sacrifice anyone in her way (including her verbally abused son Tulip) to achieve her dream. Even the supporting cast of Princess Margaret's court entourage (transformed into speechless mice by Hecuba) charm us with their pluck and resourcefulness as they aid Jack and Crosby in their quest.

Even given this multifaceted cast, I still found Tulip to be the most interesting character of all because despite his seemingly simple brutish and villainous nature, he is actually a rather complex, conflicted, and even endearing being. To me, he had aspects of the Hulk, the Beast (of Beauty and the Beast), the Frankenstein monster, and even the green ogre Shrek. However, most of all, he reminded me of a persecuted King Kong, ape-like (longer arms than legs), fierce, and frightening, but ultimately more sinned against than sinning, and generally harmless unless provoked. Also, like Kong, he topples from a great height to his death, a fate he does not warrant. In other words, "Tulip Kong", in my opinion is not such a bad guy.

From the beginning we meet the giant, you feel a pang of sympathy for him. He comes back to the castle with an armload of firewood, and all Hecuba can do is berate him for being late because he probably was playing with snakes and lizards. In fact, throughout most of the movie, Hecuba treats her son like scum. You also come to the conclusion that Hecuba's scheme is almost entirely her own (I suspect she alone killed the king and queen, Margaret's parents) and "Tulip Kong" is just along for the ride. She tells him to stop "mooning about the castle", which is so much nicer than the cave they lived in. When she orders him to locate Jack, whom she placed in a cauldron to save for dinner (!) but escapes with Crosby's and the mice's help, "Tulip Kong" doesn't exactly knock himself out looking for him. A really big kid at heart, he would rather seek refuge from Hecuba's rants in the treasure room and amuse himself with a caged lizard and the golden hen that lays golden eggs. Okay, he does crush a wind-up doll of Hecuba that spews insults at him, but at that point you are inclined to be on his side. Jack is hiding in the treasure room and almost gives himself away, but "Tulip Kong" allows himself to be distracted by Margaret calling for him. In the movie, it is glaringly obvious that he loves and cares for Margaret.

Therefore, even when "Tulip Kong" acts violently against Jack, we suspect he is doing so only to protect his future "bride". He first catches Jack in Margaret's bedroom and understandably becomes upset, relentlessly chasing after the interloper. When Jack interrupts the faux paper-cutout wedding and kisses Margaret to break the spell, "Tulip Kong", like his counterpart, understandably goes crazy, tears off his wedding suit to reveal yellow t-shirt and underwear festooned with hearts (hee-hee) and chases Jack and Margaret to get her back. During the wedding sequence itself, "Tulip Kong" cradles and treats Margaret gently, and daydreams of wedded bliss with her, both of them swinging on a wedding bell (so he has shades of Quasimodo as well). During the sequence where Tulip attempts to thrust an enormous spear into a well where Jack and Margaret are hiding, he carefully aims the spear to get at that dream-killer Jack, not Margaret. In the main hall room, where Hecuba traps the duo with her stormy magic, "Tulip Kong" refuses to obey her command to trample them. Instead, he steps on her instead! It's not murder, because Hecuba turns out to be a clockwork vessel like the doll in the treasure room. Anyway, "Tulip Kong", not Jack, is the one ultimately responsible for destroying the witch and making the castle and its occupants normal again. After that deed, "Tulip Kong" does not resume chasing Jack and Margaret or anyone else. Probably relieved that he fulfilled his previous vicarious wish to get rid of his witch mother, "Tulip Kong" lounges on the front castle steps. He resumes chasing Jack (and Crosby) a la Tom and Jerry only because they mercilessly taunt him and lure him to his death by falling off the beanstalk vine.

Again, this death was unnecessary. I would have preferred that Margaret had intervened and made friends with "Tulip Kong" in an attempt to rehabilitate and humanize him. After all, with his tremendous strength and agility, the giant would have made a useful castle companion and defender. Furthermore, Jack could have reconciled with his enemy and continued to visit the castle in the clouds. Instead, he chops down the beanstalk and loses access to that magical kingdom. A foolish decision. By not deviating from the classic plot climax, JATB 1974 misses the opportunity to show tolerance and understanding to those we consider "monsters". To paraphrase Dino DeLaurentiis, nobody cry when Hecuba "die", but when "Tulip Kong" die, people gonna cry.

P.S.: I would like to conclude with a few observations, questions, and goofs:

1. The movie establishes that Tulip can track Jack by smell ("I smell a hu-man!"). Therefore, when he is searching for Jack throughout the castle, why doesn't Tulip just sniff him out?
2. Tulip's size is somewhat inconsistent throughout JATB 1974. I think he was meant to be about 20-25 feet tall (again, Kong sized). But in comparison with the other characters, he shrinks and grows. For example, Hecuba (about 7 feet tall, I'd say) reaches just above Tulip's knee in some scenes, and up to Tulip's waist in others. When Tulip crushes her, she probably doesn't reach above his ankles. Margaret (about 5 feet tall, I'd say) sometimes reaches up to Tulip's waist as well. Jack (about 4 feet tall, I'd say) reaches up to Tulip's knee. When Tulip flicks away the charging foolhardy general with his fingers, he looks almost 50 feet tall!

3. Tulip is green-skinned like the Hulk. Perhaps the chapel was green during the wedding sequence to conceal that fact.

4. Hecuba wants to be queen. She has killed Margaret's parents. Why doesn't she get rid of Margaret from the beginning as well, instead of going through the wedding scheme? Okay, maybe it was to keep Tulip obedient, but during the wedding sequence, Hecuba daydreams that she becomes queen and turns Tulip and Margaret into mice!!! Why doesn't she do that in the first place? Did they need to be "married" for her magic to work?

5. Hecuba is a powerful elemental sorceress. However, she apparently had no defense against a size 35 EEEEEEEE moccasin coming at her from above.

6. Jack uses an axe to cut down the beanstalk and send Tulip plummeting. It takes him only one chop! He either hit a weak spot in the vine, or he doesn't know his own strength!

7. Tulip's colossal corpse has probably left a crater in the landscape (unless he vaporized on impact) and will attract scavengers and curious townspeople for miles around. The putrefying carcass will also stink up the land.

8. Jack brings two sacks full of gold and the magic golden laying hen back to his mother and sings a song about how he is responsible for making them rich. However, at the movie's end, they seem as poor as ever. Have they already spent all that money? Has the hen "gone dry", so to speak?

Blast from the past.... - Matt Willimas - Virginia, United States
My dad found all sorts of great cartoons at the video rental store for us to watch growing up. This was one of them, and even to this day when I hear the name "Jack and the Beanstalk" this crazy, haunting movie comes to mind. Even as a kid I was no dummy, I knew they took alot of liberties with the story but I didn't really mind nor do I now. Normally I usually hate song numbers in cartoons but these are good songs...well except the dog's weird little caterwaul under the moon. That was really weird. My sister and I were always glued to the TV in the afternoon and evening after preschool/kindergarten let out and we watched this cartoon movie quite a bit. I don't ever remember being bored or having places lag in boredom, unlike suffering through Lady and the Tramp or Cinderella *ugh*. It was amusing watching the silly oaf of a Jack go off dancing, meeting that creepy dude on the road with the pipe organ, getting the seeds which his mother promptly throws out the window in anger. But then the musical number and animation of the beanstalk growing....wow, it was actually entertaining. The castle in the sky was haunting, breathtaking. Madamde Heckuva (or however you spell it)and her ugly giant of a son were creepy and downright bizarre (remember the windup toy of his mother that sang that Tulip had in his drawer?). The wedding scene had such a manic gothic song, it always kept me in suspense, wondering if Jack would get there in time to save the princess from marrying Tulip. My sister and I would laugh ourselves silly during the final music number where Jack drove Tulip insane with his antics.

Heh, good childhood memories. A truly exceptional case of taking a paint by the numbers fairytale and making it fun. :)

OMG!!!! My brother drove me nuts watching this when we were kids. The songs do stay with you, for some reason "Tulip" and the chase scene have always stuck in my head but that might be because my brother would sing that song, lol. Someone has even posted clips from this on youtube! What a kicker!

Wonderfully unique adaptation of the classic story - Gregory N. Perkins - Frankfort, KY USA
This animated adaptation of "Jack and the Beanstalk" is easily the best movie I have ever seen made of the fairytale. Daringly mature and loaded with memorable songs, it is also very perceptive and heartfelt.

It also breaks the mold by taking significant creative license with the tale, and the changes wrought on the storyline are so natural that it is almost easy to criticize the original telling. For instance, there is no poetry-spouting giant here, just a mean and frankly dumb behemoth looking to absolutely crush Jack for being in his castle and looking sideways at his bewitched bride, Princess Margaret. Princess Margaret herself represents another departure from the traditional telling of "Jack and the Beanstalk," and even adds a layer of heartache, tragedy and sophistication to this unexpectedly rich treatment. Princess Margaret's signature song "No One Is Happier Than I" is drenched in bittersweet irony, and would be at home in a wide range of movies.

Also featuring a creepily maternal witch and Jack's faithful hound Crosby, this particular adaptation of "Jack and the Beanstalk" is perfect.

Check Out Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Vol. 3 for $6.96

Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Vol. 3 Review

Batman the Brave and the Bold: Volume Three

(Released February 02, 2010 by Warner Home Video)
Another Looong DVD Review by Joe Torcivia

Batman the Brave and the Bold on DVD has become one of the easiest products to review. That's because little has changed over the three releases to date.

You can read my thoughts on the background and the specifics of Volume One and Volume Two elsewhere in "All My Reviews" at Amazon.

Briefly, the animated TV series is based upon the notable comic book series from DC Comics called The Brave and the Bold. It was best known for its team-up stories that paired Batman with virtually ALL the heroes and villains of the DC Comics Universe.

The voice cast of Diedrich Bader as Batman, Dee Bradley Baker, Will Friedle, Tom Kenny, James Arnold Taylor, Corey Burton, Jeff Bennett, John DiMaggio and others are first rate, and superbly walk the delicate balance of adventure and surprisingly good humor that the series has become known for.

A particularly endearing quirk of the series is that the TEASER of most episodes tells a short and completely different story than the main body of the program. This way, you get even more DC Heroes and Villains per show.

As is our custom in these reviews, we'll break it into CONS and PROS.

Pretty much the SAME CONS and PROS of the previous two sets.

The CONS:

The Number of Episodes: Previous volumes offered only FOUR episodes, but this one offers FIVE! Probably for no other reason than, in original aired order, the set ends with a rare TWO-PARTER, and it would make no sense - even in sets produced as cheaply as these - to break up the final story of the set.

The Price: The MSRP is once again 14.98, but at least this is for FIVE episodes instead of FOUR. Diligent searchers, of course, can find it for less.

The Extra Features: Once again, there are NO extra features! A pity for a series with such a rich heritage!

Robo-Promos: "Robo-Promos" is my term for advertisements that play automatically before you even reach the initial menu. Volume Two inflicted FOUR of these upon the viewer before "getting on with the show", prompting me to add this new category to my CONS list. This was particularly annoying, given the small amount of actual program content that comprised the set, even though you can "zip" through them if you wish.

Warner, a studio that makes this too much of a standard practice, seems to have relented the onslaught a bit by limiting the "Robo-Promos" to TWO. The annoyance factor is also diminished because both promos are DC Comics-related. So, this is less of a CON than before... but still a CON.

The PROS:

Characters and Settings: If there's one thing you can count on from Batman the Brave and the Bold, it is new animated interpretations of "Characters-And-Settings-of DC Comics Lore". Needless to say, we are not disappointed...

Featured Characters: Batman, Plastic Man, Elongated Man, Babyface, Aquaman, The Atom, Chemo, The Brain, Doctor Fate, Wotan, Green Lantern Hal Jordan, Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Green Lantern G'nort, Sinestro, Despero, Mogo the living planet Green Lantern, The Guardians of the Universe, The Cavalier, Jonah Hex, Bronze Tiger, The Top, The Red Hood, Owlman and the Injustice Syndicate, Green Arrow (Silver Age, no beard), Blue Beetle III (Jaime Reyes), Red Tornado, and The Joker.

Green Lantern Corps Cameos: Kilowog, Tomar-Re, C'hp, Saalak, Arisia, Katma Tui, Boodika, Arisia, the "Diamond Green Lantern", the "Robot Green Lantern", the "Big Head Green Lantern", Xax (the insect GL), and many other familiar faces and shapes from years of Green Lantern comics.

Villain Cameos: Black Manta, Gorilla Grodd, Gentleman Ghost, Dr. Polaris, and Clock King.

It's Not TV: Viewers can enjoy Batman the Brave and the Bold with no "Network Identifying Bugs" in the corner of the screen, no pop up ads for other shows, and credits that you can "freeze-frame" and read. Viewers can hear the "extended version" of the show's ending theme, which has probably NEVER played on TV because promos are always running over it! Indeed, one of the best reasons for collecting ANY contemporary TV show on DVD is that is has probably never been seen in this particular way ever before!

Image Quality: This is a new category for me, added mostly because I now have HD TV and a Blu-ray DVD player. Batman the Brave and the Bold: Volume Three is not offered as a Blu-ray release. However, the standard definition release is presented in wide-screen and, when upconverted by the Blu-ray player, the image is so rich and vividly colorful that it looks just as good as a Hi-Def broadcast of the show!

And, the ultimate "PRO" for Batman the Brave and the Bold: Volume Three...

The Episodes:

"Journey to the Center of the Bat!":

Teaser: Plastic Man and Elongated Man argue over which of the two heroes with redundant powers Batman would prefer to work with!

Main Story: The colossal sentient toxic compound "Chemo" walks across the ocean bent on destruction. In combat, Batman takes a direct shot of Chemo's poisons and, as Aquaman so delicately puts it "...is shipping some bilge!" The Atom is called in to help. He shrinks himself and Aquaman small enough to enter Batman's bloodstream in an effort to destroy the toxins from within.

John DiMaggio's heroically enthusiastic characterization of Aquaman is one of the highlights of the series, and the way he plays off the more businesslike Atom makes for great fun. Personally, I would have called this one "Bat-Tastic Journey"!

"The Eyes of Despero!": Story by DC Comics writer J.M. De Matteis.

Teaser: Batman assists Doctor Fate battle Wotan at the Library of Infinity. The backgrounds for this short sequence are beautifully - and dizzyingly - designed in an M.C. Escher sort of way.

Main Story: Despero has conquered the Green Lantern Corps, save hot-headed Guy Gardner, dim-witted G'nort, and villain-to-be Sinestro who, for various reasons, were locked in cells at the time of the conflict. GL Hal Jordan's Power Ring enlists Batman to help. Bats frees the trio of imprisoned GL's and mounts an attack on Despero. Sinestro is still a member of the GL Corps at the time of this story, and not yet the full-fledged villain comics readers have know for decades.

"Return of the Fearsome Fangs!":

Teaser: In the old west, Batman saves Jonah Hex from being "pulled apart" by four horses (one roped to each arm and leg) by a precursor to The Royal Flush Gang. This is a tribute of sorts to the famous comic book story "Ride, Bat-Hombre, Ride!" from BATMAN # 56 (December, 1949)

Main Story: The old Tibetan martial arts master, who was instrumental in young Bruce Wayne's training, is killed (!) by three former students who have turned to the dark side. The trio, who have assumed the guise of their "spirit animals" Fox, Shark, and Vulture - as Bruce assumed that of the Bat, are after an ancient totem that will transform them into powerful mystic manifestations of the creatures they represent.

In death, the master contacts Batman who, in turn, enlists the assistance of another former student, the man known as Bronze Tiger - who assumes the guise of a "tiger", natch! This is a story of well-staged battles and beautifully rendered backgrounds. The opening scene, where a near-infinite number of arrows arc across the moonlit sky and rain down upon the Master is breathtaking! I was never a big fan of "martial arts" stories in the BATMAN comics, but I like this one - a lot!

"Deep Cover for Batman!":

Teaser: A break with "tradition" has this teaser function as the start of the episode! The heroic Red Hood of a parallel but opposite Earth, tries to escape from Owlman and his Injustice Syndicate to "our" Earth. There, he hopes to enlist the aid of its heroes. Red Hood is overpowered, and Owlman uses RH's "phase-oscillator" device to make the trip instead.

Main Story: In Part One of a rare two-part story, Owlman appears in the Batcave, Red Hood's intended destination. He is dispatched by Batman and thrown into a cell. Batman makes the return trip to the other Earth costumed as Owlman (his opposite) and infiltrates the Injustice Syndicate. There, he finds evil opposites of Green Arrow, Blue Beetle, Red Tornado and other familiar faces, and a host of imprisoned heroes-who-look-like-our-villains, including the Red Hood.

An eventual free-for-all ensues, which becomes so delightfully confusing that Batman stops short of taking a punch at this Earth's "good" Gorilla Grodd. The heroes prevail and the Red Hood is revealed as being a familiar face to Batman. (No Spoilers - but regular DC Comics readers will all know who!) Batman returns to his Earth, to another surprise - also not spoiled here.

This is a superb presentation of the parallel / infinite Earths concept that has been a cornerstone of DC Comics mythology for decades. The "overlapping Earths in sequence" image that punctuated the 1985 comic book epic CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS makes an appearance in this episode. Ironically, an ad for the upcoming DC / Warner direct-to-DVD production "Crisis on Two Worlds" appears on this disc as a Robo-Promo!

"Game Over for Owlman!":

Teaser: Another break with "tradition" has this teaser function as recap of the previous episode.

Main Story: In order to defeat Olwman circumstances lead to an unthinkable alliance with... THE JOKER! This version is a wonderful recreation of Dick Sprang's version of the character from the `40s/'50s, and is magnificently voiced by Jeff Bennett!

Among the other delights to be found in this episode are the Golden Age Batman costume (Spiky ears, no yellow oval), the Golden Age Batmobile (with Big Bat-Head as a front grille), the Silver Age Jokermobile, and various alternate versions of Batman seen over the years - Bat-Hulk (from 1966 The Brave and the Bold # 68 the first issue of the comic book title that I ever owned!), Bat-Hombre, Big Brained Batman, Red Rain (vampire) Batman, Captain Leatherwing, and an approximation of Batman One Million - and even three Batman/Joker flashback sequences lifted from the 1966 TV series! Have I piqued your interest yet?

How I wish I could spoil this one... but I won't! You'll have to see it for yourself. Suffice it to say that it is one of the finest examples of "Animated DC Comics storytelling" - and, that there is something in it to like (if not LOVE) for everyone! It is literally a DC Tour (de force) of the decades in forty-something minutes!

Overall: Batman the Brave and the Bold: Volume Three succeeds in its mission. By now, we know exactly what to expect - grand adventure, great fun and an outstanding cast of comic book characters - and it almost never lets us down! At its core are the lighter, but extremely imaginative, Silver Age DC comic books - but this clever series spreads its (Bat) wings over every point in time of the DC Comics Universe.

Despite the now-usual list of flaws, Batman the Brave and the Bold: Volume Three is highly recommended to fans and enthusiasts of Batman, DC Comics and the Warner Animated Series based upon them, the Silver and Bronze Ages of Comic Books in general. And give it EXTRA POINTS, if you are a comic book enthusiast with any degree of historical perspective!

In short, there is something in the series for "DC Geeks" of every stripe - from Gold and Silver Age onward! And, if your heart and mind belong to the DC comic books of the `60s thru `90s (as do mine), this is especially for you!

Though this may be Volume Three, if you've yet to begin viewing or collecting Batman the Brave and the Bold on DVD, this would be the ideal volume to start with - due to the extraordinary selection of episodes contained herein.

Check Out Care Bears - Adventures in Care-a-Lot for $3.07

Care Bears - Adventures in Care-a-Lot Review

I Have read alot of reviews on the carebears show over the last few months and I can tell you that there really isn't a reason for kids to be scared of any of the episodes in this series. I am a collector and own about half of the Dvds with the Origanal episodes, all the movies including the recent new ones, and a bunch of the way origanal Dic Episodes. I have watched them all and I can tell you there is nothing on any of these discs that should really scare your children. but for those of you who might be weary of No Heart and beastly here are some discs that you can get that don't include no heart: "Journey to Joke-a-Lot", "The CareBears Big Wish Movie", and All of the Origanal Dic dvds, most of which are marked with animation station at the top of the disc above the title. I personally enjoyed The CareBears big Wish Movie. but really I think all of the shows involving the carebears are great for kids to watch, (and adults too). I guess if your child is scared easily or something I wouldn't get them the discs with no heart on them but the others are still great entertament. Oh, just to clarify, I personlly thought that this disc and all the episodes on were execellent. I recommend it to everyone who loves the carebears.

Why Can't All Cartoons Be Like This!? - Julie :) - Las Vegas, NV, USA
I grew up in the 80's. Like most 80's kids, I grew up with Thundercats, She-Ra, He-Man, Smurfs, My Little Pony, Rainbow Brite, Strawberry Shortcake, and of course, The Care Bears. Sadly, the cartoons of the 80's disappeared, and we were stuck with what pathetically calls itself cartoons these days. However, 80's fans, rejoice! They are back! Although not as organized as other 80's cartoons releases, it's great to take a trip down memory lane with my friends, the Care Bears. This DVD has four episodes, and they made it with a "kid friendly" dvd, which basically means instead of a menu popping up when you first put in the dvd, you go right into the fun. This is a great buy, and I can't wait to buy the rest of these, organizational issues or not!

Help me find a lost Care Bears movie! - Natalie P. Roling - Janesville, WI USA
When I was younger we owned "Care Bears-Alice in Wonderland"-(not sure if that is correct title), has anyone else heard of it or seen it? It was one of my favorite Care Bear movies. I can't find it anywhere! Please Help!

Oh Come On.... - Kiersten's Grandma - Sheboygan, WI United States
We bought this Care Bears DVD for our 3 1/2 year old granddaughter to watch. There is absolutely nothing scary or evil about the Care Bears.Kiersten was not frightened of No Heart or Beastly.I've read lots of reviews on Amazon. Some people seem to find something scary or disturing on many of the kids shows today.Examples of reviews I've read include a Dora episode with a witch that some found too frightening for their kids, the movie Bambi,My Little Pony is supposedly evil too and now Care Bears.Lighten Up!!!For those interested,Adventures In Care-a-lot is 88 minutes in length with 4 episodes.I bought this from ShopKo for about .00.

Happy Feet (Widescreen Edition) Review

I was 14 or 15 when I first saw this movie and loved it. I found it funny and enjoyable hearing the penguans sing edited versions of songs that I always listened to or found familiar. My favorites were the Kiss, boogie wonderland, and the stevie wonder song near the end. I loved the dancing too (I'm a lover of music and dances). They did some wonderful choreography for these scenes. I expecially liked the credits when they play Song of The Heart by Prince (I MP3'ed that). I actually liked the messages of the movie. the thing about being different from others in society is one. Mumbo is ridiculed for being different which can be reflected in our own societies. The humans are ruining the earth thing was good because in reality its true. Someone said that its overboard because it gives humans few redeeming qualities, but I have to disagree because when you think of what goes on in the world humans do have few redeeming qualities in terms of nature. Now theres one thing I have to agree with though -snicker- some of this is a little too adult for the little ones. It should have been at least a PG-13 rating even though some of the content will go over thier heads. I knew when I saw this in theatres there would be some parents out there getting thier panties in a bunch over the Prince, Boy II Men, and Color me Bad songs. The reason why I give HF a 4 instead of a five is because near the middle it drags on a little too long.

Happy Feet (Widescreen Edition) Overview

In the great nation of Emperor Penguins, deep in Antarctica, you're nobody unless you can sing - which is unfortunate for Mumble (ELIJAH WOOD), who is the worst singer in the world. He is born dancing to his own tune...tap dancing. As fate would have it, his one friend, Gloria (BRITTANY MURPHY), happens to be the best singer around. Mumble and Gloria have a connection from the moment they hatch, but she struggles with his strange "hippity- hoppity" ways. Away from home for the first time, Mumble meets a posse of decidedly un-Emperor-like penguins - the Adelie Amigos. Led by Ramon (ROBIN WILLIAMS), the Adelies instantly embrace Mumble's cool dance moves and invite him to party with them. In Adelie Land, Mumble seeks the counsel of Lovelace the Guru (also voiced by ROBIN WILLIAMS), a crazy-feathered Rockhopper penguin who will answer any of life's questions for the price of a pebble. Together with Lovelace and the Amigos, Mumble sets out across vast landscapes and, after some epic encounters, proves that by being true to yourself, you can make all the difference in the world.

Happy Feet (Widescreen Edition) Specifications

For anyone who thought the Oscar-winning documentary March of the Penguins was the most marvelous cinematic moment for these nomads of the south, you haven't seen nothing yet. Happy Feet is an animated wonder about a penguin named Mumble who can't sing, but can dance up a storm. George Miller, the driving force behind the Babe (and Mad Max) movies, takes another creative step in family entertainment with this big, beautiful, music-fueled film that will have kids and their parents dancing in the streets. From his first moment alive, Mumble (voiced Elijah Woods) feels the beat and can't stop dancing. Unfortunately, emperor penguins are all about finding their own heart song, and the dancing youngster--as cute as he is--is a misfit. Luckily, he bumps into little blue penguins and a Spanish-infused group (led by Robin Williams) and begins a series of adventures. Miller has an exceptional variety of entertainment: Busby Berkley musical numbers, amusement-park thrills, exciting chase sequences (seals and orca lovers might like think otherwise), and even an environmental message that doesn't weigh you down. Best of all, you don't know where the movie is going in the last act, a rare occurrence these days in family entertainment. A fusion of rock songs, mashed-up and otherwise, are featured; this movie is as much a musical as a comedy. Mumble's solo dance to a new version of Stevie Wonder's "I Wish" by Fantasia, Patti, and Yolanda may be the most joyful moment on camera in 2006. --Doug Thomas

So much more than a children's movie! - Whitelightone - Canada
Happy Feet is a modern day fairytale and allegory of healing and redemption, the resilience of the spirit (human and penguin!), the power of the collective, and of course, the hero's quest. Every earthling over the age of 8 ought to watch it!

Feet won't stop - D.K. Spillman - Burbank, CA
Loved the movie! The music is enough to get you on your feet to dance and the story line is bright and fun.

Disappointed! - Persnickety - Columbia SC
I specifically ordered this movie for my niece in college as a valentine's day gift. It was to be a study break movie. I chose this company because it said new, sealed package, as from the factory. This is not what I received! The package was inserted in the mailer with the broken seal end inserted in the envelope mailer first. So when you opened the package, it appeared new and the seal appeared unbroken. This is not what the product claim was and not what I ordered. The price was good, and I am familiar with the movie, but I ordered a new copy! I did not have time to return it and order another copy, so I kept it, but I will never order from this vendor again! Why try to be deceptive, and think you can fool the consumer, as if I would not notice the way it was packaged? Bah! Humbug! Shame on you!

The Pink Panther Classic Cartoon Collection, Vol. 3: Frolics in the Pink Review

This collection of Pink Panther cartoons which delighted theater audiences many years ago. These cover the years from 1968 to 1975. The first half-dozen or so marked the end of the first "period" of these cartoons. Then, after a three-year hiatus, they were brought back. Many of the "newer" ones had the same trademark gags but a few had some new angles.

All of them here range from good-to-excellent, except the ones with the laugh track. Those are lame, but with 27 individual cartoons, you get a lot of good stuff certainly enough to warrant the purchase of this DVD.
