Before Mickey, there was Oswald: By 1926, Walt Disney's first series, the live-action/animation "Alice" comedies, had run its course. Under pressure from distributor Charles Mintz and Carl Laemmle of Universal, Disney and his artists created Oswald the Lucky Rabbit in 1927. Within months, Moving Picture World praised the cartoons' "astounding feat of jumping into first-run favor overnight." During the "Oswald" series, Disney's talents as an organizer and story man began to emerge; his friend and head animator Ub Iwerks designed Oswald's appearance and imbued him with a jaunty style of movement. But in 1928, Mintz took the character away from Disney. To replace Oswald, Walt created Mickey Mouse.

This important collection includes the 13 surviving silent "Oswald" shorts (of 26). Many of them feel like rough drafts for later Mickey cartoons. When Oswald enters a trans-Atlantic race in "The Ocean Hop," the antics he performs in his airplane prefigure the ones in "Plane Crazy." In "Sky Scrappers," Oswald takes a job on a construction site where his girlfriend (an unnamed cat) sells box lunches, anticipating the Mickey and Minnie cartoon "Building a Building" (1933)--down to the opening shot of a dinosaur-like steam shovel at work. The silent "Oswald" shorts have rarely been seen since they were first released 80 years ago: Some viewers may grow impatient with these relatively crude cartoons, but they remain intriguing examples into Walt Disney's early work.

Leslie Iwerks' informative documentary The Hand Behind the Mouse: The Ub Iwerks Story (1999) traces the life of her grandfather. One of the greatest talents of the silent cartoon era, Ub Iwerks animated the first Mickey shorts and "Silly Symphonies" almost single-handedly. Iwerks left Disney to start his own studio in 1930. Although it attracted an impressive array of talent, it closed in 1938. Two years later, Iwerks returned to Disney, where he won two Oscars for innovations in visual effects technology. Hand suggests that the Iwerks cartoons were too sophisticated for the era of the Hays Code. But for all his talent as an animator and technical innovator, Iwerks was not an effective director: His studio's cartoons simply weren't very good. Included on this disc are three "Alice" comedies, "Plane Crazy," "Steamboat Willie," and "The Skeleton Dance," which showcase Iwerks' endearingly bouncy animation. I Have read alot of reviews on the carebears show over the last few months and I can tell you that there really isn't a reason for kids to be scared of any of the episodes in this series. I am a collector and own about half of the Dvds with the Origanal episodes, all the movies including the recent new ones, and a bunch of the way origanal Dic Episodes. I have watched them all and I can tell you there is nothing on any of these discs that should really scare your children. but for those of you who might be weary of No Heart and beastly here are some discs that you can get that don't include no heart: "Journey to Joke-a-Lot", "The CareBears Big Wish Movie", and All of the Origanal Dic dvds, most of which are marked with animation station at the top of the disc above the title. I personally enjoyed The CareBears big Wish Movie. but really I think all of the shows involving the carebears are great for kids to watch, (and adults too). I guess if your child is scared easily or something I wouldn't get them the discs with no heart on them but the others are still great entertament. Oh, just to clarify, I personlly thought that this disc and all the episodes on were execellent. I recommend it to everyone who loves the carebears.

Why Can't All Cartoons Be Like This!? - Julie :) - Las Vegas, NV, USA
I grew up in the 80's. Like most 80's kids, I grew up with Thundercats, She-Ra, He-Man, Smurfs, My Little Pony, Rainbow Brite, Strawberry Shortcake, and of course, The Care Bears. Sadly, the cartoons of the 80's disappeared, and we were stuck with what pathetically calls itself cartoons these days. However, 80's fans, rejoice! They are back! Although not as organized as other 80's cartoons releases, it's great to take a trip down memory lane with my friends, the Care Bears. This DVD has four episodes, and they made it with a "kid friendly" dvd, which basically means instead of a menu popping up when you first put in the dvd, you go right into the fun. This is a great buy, and I can't wait to buy the rest of these, organizational issues or not!

We bought this Care Bears DVD for our 3 1/2 year old granddaughter to watch.There is absolutely nothing scary or evil about the Care Bears.Kiersten was not frightened of No Heart or Beastly.I've read lots of reviews on Amazon.Some people seem to find something scary or disturing on many of the kids shows today.Examples of reviews I've read include a Dora episode with a witch that some found too frightening for their kids,the movie Bambi,My Little Pony is supposedly evil too and now Care Bears.Lighten Up!!!For those interested,Adventures In Care-a-lot is 88 minutes in length with 4 episodes.I bought this from ShopKo for about .00.

I em enthralled that by some godsent miracle, you actually decided to release these wonderful films to DVD! It's certainly about time!

However four 7 minute shorts do not a DVD make!

Why couldn't you have at least included some other classic UPA entries in the Jolly Frolics series, such as the wonderfully creative and artistic masterpiece, Rooty Toot Toot, The Tell-Tale Heart, the many Mr. Magoo theatrical shorts you hold license to, etc..?

Again, I'm very happy to finally be able to own these on one convenient DVD package, but it seems like very little effort was put into this release. These cartoons were not aimed at children and I don't expect the majority of sales to come from them either. These are among the most artistic, innovative, stylized and brilliant animated film productions of all-time!

The UPA cartoons deserve their own comprehensive release so please stop neglecting your animated film library!!!

The five stars are for the cartoons themselves. They took me back to the 1950's when this new, modern-style of cartoons was just beginning. At an age when I was just starting to discover myself, these cartoons were "cool" and I embraced their modernistic style and jazzy scores. The cartoons look pretty good on this DVD but they only leave you with the incomplete feeling of wanting more. The Steve Bosustow/UPA cartoons were a ground-breaking, award-winning series. Many of them immediately come to mind: The Tell-Tale Heart, Rooty Toot Toot, The Unicorn in the Garden, Madeline, and the Mr. McGoo series to name just a few. It is a crime against film history that these exiting cartoons are not available. Columbia Pictures: Wake up!!



The good parts are great - wiredweird - Earth, or somewhere nearby
Maybe that should be the good part - singular. The first of these cartoons adapts a story by Dr. Seuss. Gerald, a small boy, speaks only in sound effects: twangy jaw-harp "boings," train whistles, and lots more. With the good Doctor's bouncy script, even the loose and somewhat sub-par animation come to life, creating a charming story.

The franchise goes quickly down hill, though. Some amusement remains in this one-joke series, as the joke is repeated in the other three `toons on this disk. This series comes from one of the less fortunate eras of animation, however, after the era when labor was cheap enough for artistic animation by hand, but before computers took over much of the drudgery in creating thirty slightly different images for each second of playing time. Good story-telling could have overcome that accident of birth, but did so only in the first of these shorts.

I'm glad I spent the half hour that these cartoons lasted, but I probably won't spend it again. Five stars for the first `toon on the disc, but less for the others. And, for the price, I would have appreciated something more than a half hour of viewing time.

I rented out this DVD for my 3 yr old son at the library - didn't even know they had cartoon Iron Man! He absolutely loved it and wouldn't give it up after 4 weeks of having to renew it so I knew I had to order his own copy. Anyway, I am so happy w/ it as this is the complete season - I was waiting forever at the library for the other episodes to become available - I guess it's quite popular for all the kids now a days. Also got Iron Man as an adult version too - as that was the version I purchased without knowing the difference. Anyway, I'm very happy to have made this 'mistake' as my son knows the difference and depending on his mood, he'll watch either version - of Tony Stark as a teenager or as an adult. On the side, I love the teenage version of Iron Man as it includes a great theme song that all 3 of my kids sing along to.

After getting my 4 year old volume one, we were unable to find the other volumes. This was the cheapest vendor we could find and the product was delivered promptly and was perfect. The only problem is that now I have 2 copies of volume:)



Iron Mn rules! (for ages 3 & 39) - David W. Thompson -
But we bought this for our Iron Man-obsessed 3-yr-old and it was a big hit. And we quite enjoyed it ourselves.
As an adult, I'd probably give it 4 stars. For my son I give 5 and for what it is (aimed at teenagers) they really hit the mark.
A hardcore comics fan (as I once was) may likely be turned off by the fact that the character (Tony, Pepper, Rhodey, Mandarin, etc.) are all tennagers and he show is aimed at young adults, but if you can get over that, the plot gets fairly involved, with various continuing storylines and well-thought-out guest appearances by villians (& a few heroes) that you'll recognize from the "Marvel Universe."

This is truly a wonderful reimagining of the Tony Stark story. My three year old and I watch this alot along with the original 1966 Iron Man. The stories and animation are superb and I am delighted that Disney saw enough potential to allow this show to stick around (RIP. "Wolverine & The X-Men" and "The Spectacular Spider-Man") for a second season. The special features are not much but still this show is worth the buy especially now that IRON MAN 2 is out and the hype is high. So sit back relax and prepare yourself to be blown away true believers! Excelsior!!!

Good DVD - Emily Anglin - Richalnd, MI
This is DVD has a great story line.... It was fun to watch the first time, but my kids (ages 3-4) haven't really asked to watch it very much. You aren't able to fast forward through the previews(Why they put previews on Kids DVD's in the first place is beyond me) so it takes a while to actually get to the movie. And I think by that time they are a bit board with waiting and watching the movie.

This is a great DVD filled with magical Care Bear adventures. Beastly and Shreeky do no disappoint in their usual roles as some of the funniest and most lovable cartoon "bad guys" of all time. Their dialogue is clever and laugh-out-loud silly. Care Bears will cheer you up when you are feeling down!

disc won't play on our player - Rocco - Philadelphia
Plays the previews but won't bring up main menu or play the feature. A new replacement DVD did the same thing. All other DVDs play fine on our player. Have heard others report similar thing for Care Bear DVDs. I guess another reason not to give in to crass commercialism of children's entertainment.

The Orange Islands continuity (1999) serves as a bridge between the longer Pokémon storylines about the Indigo League (1997) and Johto League (1999) adventures. Professor Oak sends Ash, Misty and Brock to the Orange Islands to retrieve the mysterious GS Pokéball found by fellow researcher Professor Ivy. When they reach her lab, moonstruck Brock decides to stay with the Professor and her three female assistants. Ash and Misty are soon joined by Tracey, a "Pokémon Watcher" in training who sketches. After the perpetually amorous Brock, he makes a rather bland companion, although the caricatures of Groucho Marx and Clint Eastwood they encounter liven things up a bit. The characters roam aimlessly from island to island, escaping the snares of the inept Team Rocket, who stalk them in a submarine disguised as a giant Magicarp and a balloon that looks like Meowth. Ash wins the Coral Eye, Sea Ruby, Spike Shell, and Jade Star badges, which qualify him for the Orange League Tournament, where he finally learns to make his recalcitrant Charizard obey him. These stories lack a narrative arc: Ash's battles at the various gyms don't escalate, nor is there any sense of urgency to the mission to return the GS ball. The adventure concludes with Ash, Misty, and Tracey returning to Pallet Town, just in time to encounter the long-absent Gary. I bought this for my wife who loved the Indigo League back when it was on the air, as I did, and owns the box set of that. We watched the Indigo League and were excited to see that the Orange Islands arc was available on DVD.

For those of you who love Pokémon, but haven't seen this series, I'd recommend picking it up. It's just as fun as the first series, but it does seem a bit hokey. It's more like a parody of Pokémon than an actual new season, with Team Rocket getting even more over-the-top, and Ash becoming a bit more stereotypically anime. It also has a feeling of watching Scooby-Doo, with crazy inane plots, total non-sequiturs and just generally weird stuff. Pikachu and Togepi get much more screen time, it seems like after every line the camera cuts to a close up on one of them, and as Pokémon, they don't have much to say.

That said, it was a very enjoyable season with all the fun and wackiness we've come to expect from Pokémon. Anyone who enjoyed the first series will love this one, and it's a great addition to your collection.



Fab boxset for Pokemon Season 2 - popmanw - England, UK
Pokemon: Orange Islands box set is a great addition to the classic Pokemon DVD collection. The Orange Islands series was season 2 following the successful Indigo League season. Viz Media have done a great job at presenting these DVDs which all remain true to the original broadcasts. The episodes are well chaptered on the DVD system and it features a colourful menu system. A must by for any original Pokemon fan who wants an historic collection. I am from the United Kingdom (England) where box sets like this do not exist our side. I imported mine from the U.S. and works flawlessly on the multi-region DVD/HDD player. Five stars from me.



Quality stuff - A. L. Hrabovsky -
I grew up watching Pokemon on TV, and never saw very many of the Orange Island series. After I bought the first season, I knew I wanted more, so I koff'd up the twenty-seven dollars and sent it off. The second season is definitely not as good as the first. It seems the loss of Brock hit the writers hard, and Tracy is sometimes half-Brock, secretly swooning over Super Jenny from Pinkan island (home to the pink pokemon) and Ultra Strong Joy who travels the Orange Islands on kayak. He's a bit more of a creeper, too. Brock was up-front about his love for attractive women, while Tracy mostly just sits back and draws them. He's no Brock, but likable nonetheless. I definitely recommend this second season to people who enjoyed the first. Bonus: new theme song.

The young adults that I purchased this for were excited when it arrived. They were not disappointed. It was every bit as fun for them to watch during their annual "POKEFEST" as it was when they remembered it from their youth. They had a great time.
