The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo: The Complete Series Review

The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo: The Complete Series Feature

  • 13 GHOSTS OF SCOOBY-DOO, THE (DVD MOVIE)

The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo: The Complete Series Overview

In The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo, mystery and mayhem prevail when Scooby-Doo and Shaggy accidentally set free a pack of troublemaking spooks. On a trip to Honolulu, Daphne's plane winds up landing in Tibet. While visiting a temple, Scooby and Shaggy are tricked into opening the Chest of Demons, which houses 13 of the most-frightening ghosts and ghouls to ever haunt the earth. The ghosts however, can only be returned to the chest by those who originally released them. To prevent them from wreaking havoc upon the world, the gang embarks on a global quest to recapture them. Scooby-Doo's nephew, Scrappy-Doo, a mischievous boy named Flim-Flam, and warlock Vincent Van Ghoul join the team throughout the season, as they set out to trap the escaped specters.

The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo: The Complete Series Specifications

The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo! was a 1985 ABC TV series based on the original Hanna-Barbera Saturday-morning cartoon Scooby-Doo. In this series, Scooby, Shaggy, Daphne, and Scooby's nephew Scrappy are headed for a vacation in Hawaii when a miscalculation lands them in the mountains of Tibet, where they meet preadolescent con artist Flim Flam and warlock Vincent Van Ghoul (a parody of Vincent Price who's voiced by Vincent Price). Scooby and Shaggy have the misfortune of opening a chest of demons that releases 13 dangerous ghosts that only they can recapture. Thus begins a quest that takes the newly formed gang around the world under the direction of Vincent Van Ghoul and his crystal ball. Never far behind are two bumbling ghosts, Weerd and Bogel, whose mission is to foil the gang's every move. From Maldor the Malevolent and his forest-come-to-life to the trance-of-love-wielding gaze of Nicara, the time-speeding Time Slime, and the calliope-playing Professor Fantasmo, each of the ghosts and demons poses their own special challenge for Scooby and his friends, but somehow the gang always manages to work together and contain their target. The characters have a bit of a 1980s look and it does seem a bit strange to be missing Fred and Velma, but Flim Flam adds a different dimension with his crazy schemes that seem destined to backfire, and Vincent Van Ghoul brings a whole new sense of spookiness. Naturally, humor abounds and Shaggy and Scooby can be counted on for their fraidy-cat nerves and their penchant for Scooby snacks. Of special note is the "That's Monstertainment" episode, which parallels the classic movie Frankenstein with Scooby and Shaggy in the leading roles. Bonus features include the "Don't Feed the Animals" episode from the Shaggy and Scooby-Doo Get a Clue series and a preview for the Scooby-Doo First Frights video game. The fusion of powerful storylines witty banter and a dark atmosphere made Sonic The Hedgehog--dubbed SatAM by its legions of fans--a favorite among youngsters and teens when it premiered on ABC in 1993. Inspired by the phenomenon that took the gaming world by storm Sonic The Hedgehog likewise broke through the barriers of what was expected of a Saturday morning cartoon. Now all 26 episodes are available in this action-packed collectors box set.

Sonic The Hedgehog - The Complete Series Specifications

Nineties-era cartoon fans may remember that at one time, two animated series based on the ultra-popular Sega game character Sonic the Hedgehog sped across TV sets in 1993. This Sonic aired on Saturday mornings between '93-'95 and offered a slightly darker tone and more elaborate stories than its syndicated counterpart, The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (1993 to present). Jaleel White (Urkel from Family Matters) provided the voice of Sonic for both series, but the similarities between the two shows essentially ended there; SatAM (as it was known to its small but loyal fanbase) followed the futuristic adventures of young Sonic and his band of Freedom Fighters (which included Bunnie Rabbot, Antoine, and other characters from the original games) as they attempted to foil the evil plans of mad scientist Dr. Robotnik, who had enslaved the city of Mobotropolis and turned its citizens into robots. Where The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog focused on the comic elements of the games, SatAM played more like a serial, with each week presenting a new dilemma for Sonic and his pals to overcome. Sadly, the Freedom Fighters' struggles only lasted for two seasons (though a third was reportedly plotted out), but fans can enjoy the entire 26-episode network run with this four-disc set, which includes a respectable amount of supplemental features. Chief among these are short interviews with White and series head writer Ben Hurst; a smattering of deleted and extended scenes are also included, as is a storyboard-to-screen comparison, a gallery of concept art, and a printable script for the series' pilot, "Heads or Tails." Devoted fans may also glimpse a reproduction of their own Sonic fan art on the set's case. -- Paul Gaita

kind of a disapointment - J. Soria -
I can't believe they call this the complete series cuz like The Transformers there were some more episodes after the movie. That is why I bought this cuz I thought this set would include those episodes so I could finally see the sequel to the movie. But no this set stops at the movie. If your a real fan like me you know this series continued after the movie. Yeah General Hawk in his new outfit, the new G.I.Joe base, a new Battle Andriod Trooper commander named Overkill, & Ninja Force with Snake-Eyes, Storm Shadow, & Scarlet. Other than that i like this set.

Good buy - M. Bell - seattle
As good as I remember. Now, my kids can watch it. For some reason my 4-yr old daughter seems to enjoy it more than me now, and she especially likes the opening and closing music. Got it when amazon had a sale for 93 dollars, which is about a dollar an episode. Great value! I wish I didn't donate all of my vintage figures (and I had a gigantic collection). Oh well.

Defenders Of The Earth - The Complete Series, Vol. 1 Review

I loved the Defnders of the Earth when I was a kid. I remember rushing home to see it every day after school. I've been looking for it for the past twenty years, convinced that I was the only one that still remembered the series with any fondness. Yes, the animation is terrible (not bad for the time though) and the stories are sometimes a little hacknied but I still love it.

The extra features on the DVD are a little disappointing. The one commentary track is great and I wish they'd done another. They tended to repeat a lot of what they said in the commentary in the interviews. It's also missing the advertised Flash Gordon animated episode. Not a great loss, IMHO, but it makes the set look unfinished.

Defenders Of The Earth - The Complete Series, Vol. 1 Overview

Tyrant Ming the Merciless and his vast army of evil accomplices are working overtime to eliminate the human race. But the Defenders of Earth led by legendary crime-fighters The Phantom Flash Gordon Mandrake and his trusted confidant and bodyguard Lothar join forces with their uniquely talented teenage children to challenge Ming and his evil followers in a series of great adventures. Both sides employ powerful computers and space age technology in their arsenals of weapons. They are our last best hope. Defenders Of The Earth - The Complete Series, Vol. 1 Specifications

Marvel Productions gave an invigorating update to a trio of venerable comic strip heroes in the '80s animated series Defenders of the Earth; though the teaming of Flash Gordon, Mandrake the Magician, and The Phantom did not prove as popular with young viewers as they did some fifty years before (the show lasted just one season, and the Marvel tie-in comic only ran for four issues), the concept clearly had a following, as evidenced by this impressive five-disc set. The series' premise, which takes place in the year 2015, pits space adventurer Flash Gordon against his longtime foe Ming the Merciless, who is again bent on dominating the Earth; to thwart Ming's plans, Flash teams with jungle king The Phantom and spellcaster Mandrake the Magician (whose henchman, Lothar, has been here promoted to fulltime hero status), as well as their respective offspring, to protect the planet. Though to most kid viewers-–both in 1986 and today–-these classic King Features Syndicate characters don't carry the same level of freight as in their parents' (or grandparents') day, the partnership does makes for some exciting adventures, and the superheroes-and-super-offspring angle plays a lot better than it sounds. The Defenders set contains the first 33 episodes of the series and provides a wealth of supplemental material and background information that should please longtime fans of the show; featurettes include interviews with the voice talent and series producers, an image gallery of sketches and model sheets, and character profiles, and the producers and several voice actors are reunited to provide commentary for the pilot episode, "Escape from Mongo." But perhaps the most intriguing extra is the original presentation pilot, which offers very different characters and animation than in "Escape from Mongo." DVD-ROM owners can also view complete episodic scripts and storyboards in PDF format. -- Paul Gaita

Missing Special Features. >:( - Christopher Walker -
The DVDs themselves are great and the show is highly entertaining, but the set I got (and according to the one review I could find online that talked about the special features) has the DVD-Rom and Bonus Episode features missing from the discs. Every single solitary listing of features on the set (which I bought new and still in shrink wrap) lists the missing features, and with no manufacturer's note about them included, you are left to discover it for yourself.

Likely not a big deal to most, but it was the series bible PDF that really sold me on getting this set. The worst part is that the original manufacturer is out of business, so there's no one to complain to.

Defenders - Traven J. Terzich - usa
It seems tradinonal for most comic companys to have their heros forme a group. DC has JLA, as well as JSA, Teen Titans, etc. Marvel has the Avengers and so on. Thus it only seems natural for King Features to have their comic book heros team up. Fan boys like to see their heros in the same world team up and fight evil, they also like to see heros fight eachother to see whos better. Its a natural thing in the comic book world. thus its no surpise for these heros to join up to forme a team. I dont understand why so many complain about that aspect of this cartoon.

First off this was a great cartoon. Allthough admitdly of the main chartures, Flash Gordon is more well known. (Intrestingly this series was my first introduction to The Phantom). Secondly this series last for at least 65 episodes, long enough to maintain interest in the charture. In regards of Flash Gordon this series is my third favorit incarnation of the chartur. The first is the 80s movie, and the second the filmation series.

Now for a bit of background. Flash Gordon was a top althlet who was rocketed to Mongo to fight the evil tyrant Ming the Merciless. The Phantom is a hero who lives in the jungels and fights crime. (Hes like a cross between Tarzan and Zorro, but has his own special storyline). Mandrake the Magican is an illusionist who poses as a stage magigian and fights crime. His companion is Lothar (a rather uninteresting charture in the comics). what I liked with this series is that Lothar is upgraded to hero states. sure ok hes the token black guy, but he is such a great charture. its good to have him in this series. these three main chartures have previously had their own seprat comic strip adventures. for this cartoon all three join up to fight evil. Each brings something to the team, as the credits proclaim. Flash the pilot, Mandrak with his illusions, Phantom with his cunning, and Lothar brings strength. added to this are the young companions. first there is Flash's son, Rick. there is Lothar's son LJ (Lothar JR). The Phantom's daughter, Jeda, who can camunicat with the animals. finaly there is Mandrake's ward, Kashin. together they forme the Defenders fighting none other then Ming himself. (Ming seems the only big enough villain the heros could face, as Gordon has the only worth while reacuring villain on his roster.).

Flash has lost his wife to Ming's crulety (one of the few times a death is depicted in comics). she is never named on screan. allthough it would be hard to imagine Gordon marrying anyone other then Dale Arden. (I think in the four comic book series based on this cartoon she is even given that name.) However her memory lives on in the computer Dynac. Dynac is an artifial intelligence that at Ming's side are his computor Octon, his Ice warriors, and his treacherous son Kro-Tan. Ming also has a duaghter, but she is NOT named Aura. there are other villains as well. Interestingly there is the Phantoms evil brother, Kurt Walker, who becomes the Weather Demon. the Sky Band, old foes of the Phantom, the episode even retells the orginal storyline of that comic allthough breifly. the Defenders face many challenges along the way.

the setting is in the future, here Mongo is a desolat planet which Ming has used up its resourses, and he wants to claim the earth. the Defenders attempt to stop his plans. there are some interesting episodes, such as when Jedda thinks her father is dead and she must take on his mantel. Krotan would later betray his father and attempt to take over Mongo, only to face a bigger threat. there is even an episode featuring someone I call the the 10th Defender, Prince Valiant of the Hal Foster comics. Valiant's son even makes an apperance. (allthough Valiant would get his own cartoon series much later on). its still nice to see him make an apperance here.through out this series there are many surpises and interesting episodes. some so so storys, but some good episodes.
(I wonder if the story Root of Evil was an early pilot since the art is so different.)

Again this is a rather good series I felt.
a unique cartoon series. well worth watching.

Good Series - Brenden McDaniel - Milwaukee,Wi USA
Nice series. Graphics good for the 80's. Nice to see another universe besides Marvel and DC. The last 5 episodes in this set are the best.

Classic - Al-duha Moore -
One of my favorite cartoons as a child. This cartoons brings back so many memories. My children even love it. Thank you for the condition of it and the delivery time.

G.I. Joe A Real American Hero: Complete Collectors Set [The Complete Series] Review

DISCLOSURE: While I am interested in purchasing this, and will more than likely do so, despite the flaws listed by others, I DO NOT currently own this at this time.

Now that that's out of the way, let me get to why I am on here. I have seen two big, in-depth reviews of this product and they have been more helpful and insightful than anyone can imagine. In fact, it should be mine and everyone else's wish that more people write reviews like these so that others know just exactly what they are getting when they purchase said product.

Yes, packaging is very important when making a big purchase. Would you buy this if it was made out of cardstock, or regular untreated cardboard, or manilla folders?

And yes, the quality of print transfers definitely matter. If you are spending the time to make something this big, do it right. Although, I am a fan of tv to dvds being made as they aired, political incorrectness, flaws and all. Does something as trivial as two seconds of credits really matter, as someone asked? YES! In terms of music and video, especially animation, two seconds is a lot. I have refused to buy official LP to CD releases because of such known omissions. And I would do the same for dvds. And censorship? You betcha! Why can't things be released as they were made, language, images, and all. Popeye The Sailor, Vol. One has disclaimers, so should Johnny Quest (1964) (Hint, hint!)

And for the people that get on here and make rude comments about said reviewers, take a long look at yourself before coming on here to try to insult people who write heartfelt reviews of products. Without them we would be a nation of pansies, too scared to buy anything or we would have a s-ton of less than stellar products clogging up our houses.

Used to watch this growing up as a kid and just had to add it to my collection of favorite cartoons I used to watch as a kid. I have the episodes on VHS already but the quality of the tapes is not the greatest and some episodes are missing, so I knew it was time for an ungrade to DVD.

The only problem I have so far is the same issue a lot of other ppl have with this box set. For the price you pay certain things are rather flimsy like the pocket that holds the DVDS is just glued on and the straps look as if they will rip at any time.

But all in all I am pleased with my purchase.
