Walt Disney seems to have had a special affection for Lewis Carroll's "Alice" stories. "Alice's Wonderland" (1923), a short about a live-action little girl in a cartoon world, led to his first successful series, the "Alice" comedies (collected on Walt Disney Treasures: Disney Rarities--Celebrated Shorts, 1920s -1960s). During the early '30s, he talked about making an animation/live-action feature of "Alice in Wonderland" with Mary Pickford in the title role. But almost two decades would elapse before Disney released his Alice. It's the most uneven of the classic Disney features, juxtaposing brilliant and dull sequences. The Mad Tea Party, the Queen of Hearts' Croquet Game, and Alice's encounters with the Caterpillar and Cheshire Cat fuse the spirit of Carroll's words, the vitality of the polished animation, and the stylized look and brilliant palette of designer Mary Blair. But the song "I Give Myself Very Good Advice" and the unsatisfying adaptation of "The Walrus and Carpenter" bring the story to a halt. Kimba The White Lion Ultra DVD Box Set (Limited Edition) Specifications

Osamu Tezuka based Kimba the White Lion on his long-running manga Jungle Taitei ("Jungle Emperor"). Because it was partially funded by NBC Enterprises, the show remained episodic, with no sustained story arcs. Tezuka had wanted to adapt the storyline of the manga, which traced the main character's childhood, adult years, and eventual death, followed by his son's succession. When Kimba debuted in syndication in 1966, it was the first color Japanese series to air in the U.S.

Born on the ship transporting his mother to a European zoo, Kimba escapes and swims back to Africa, where he's hailed as the successor to his father, Caesar. With the assistance of wise old Dan'l Baboon, bigmouth parrot Pauley Cracker, and kindly human Roger, Kimba protects all the animals in the jungle. He insists on good sportsmanship, honesty, and friendship, sometimes to the point of priggishness.

The unabashed moralizing, cute designs, and very limited animation make Kimba feel like a throwback to the mid-1950s, when cartoon series were pitched to very young children. By the time the series aired, American kids were watching much more sophisticated shows: The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, Beany and Cecil, and The Flintstones. The stories have some distinctly odd aspects: Kimba insists all the carnivores switch to a vegetable diet, and, in some episodes, he sleeps with the rug made from his father's hide.

The extras include the original Japanese version of episode 1, scenes that were deleted from five episodes, and a 32-page booklet "How Kimba Came to Be" by Robin Leyden and Fred Patten (published in Fanta's Zine in 1991). Batty Koda, Crysta, Pips and the Beetle Boys return in a new animated full-length musical, full of all the fun and adventure that made "FernGully: The Last Rainforest" so special. All is well in FernGully until the day a group of humans comes in and captures three baby animals under Crysta's care. Now the babies' only hope is for Pips, Batty and the Beetle Boys to venture into the great unknown, the town where the humans live. With the help of a young girl named Budgie and her grandpa, the small yet heroic rescuers embark on the ultimate adventure to save their friends before they are smuggled away forever.

FernGully 2 - The Magical Rescue Specifications

Life in FernGully, a 1,000-year-old rainforest, is idyllic for the woodland animals and two fairies named Crysta and Pips. Still, Pips longs to see the world beyond the forest. When two human poachers steal three baby animals under Crysta's care, Pips is quick to declare his intention to travel to "town" and rescue the stolen animals. A bat (appropriately named Batty) offers much doom-and-gloom advice against the trip, but eventually Pips and his band of Beetle Boys head to town with Batty in the lead. Crysta soon finds the poacher's abandoned dog and follows her friends to town in the hopes of returning the dog to his home. The group's first glimpses of town show a grimy dump and a sewer pipe dumping refuse into a local body of water. A carnival changes their perspective, offers a chance meeting with a young clown-in-training named Budgie, and distracts the group from their mission. Batty and the youngest Beetle Boy eventually locate the stolen animals, and, with help from the rest of the group, battle the evil poachers to win the animals' freedom. This 73-minute, animated musical is entertaining but somewhat lacking in excitement and drive. The film also lacks Robin Williams, who voiced Batty in the first film. The film's message comes across crystal clear--uncaring humans are destroying the rainforests without regard for the larger consequences of their actions. (Ages 3 to 8) --Tami Horiuchi
