Challenge of the Super Friends - The First Season (DC Comics Classic Collection) Review

Challenge of the Super Friends - The First Season (DC Comics Classic Collection) Overview

CHALLENGE OF THE SUPER FRIENDS:SEASON - DVD Movie

Challenge of the Super Friends - The First Season (DC Comics Classic Collection) Specifications

Challenge of the Super Friends is the ultimate animated all-star contest of good versus evil. The original Super Friends (running from 1973 to 1977--Wonder Twins and Gleek anyone??) was made up of the greatest DC Comics superheroes fighting together to uphold justice for all mankind. Overall, it was a pretty good show, but getting stale very fast. In 1978, the superhero animation bar was raised high when the first (and only) season of Challenge of the Super Friends hit the Saturday morning circuit. Immediately these 16 episodes made up the best that Super Friends had to offer for one reason alone: the creation of the Legion of Doom, banding together the 13 most sinister villains of all-time from remote galaxies. Led by the sinister genius of Lex Luthor, the Legion of Doom was dedicated to take over the universe, and only the Super Friends, led by Superman, Wonder Woman and the Dynamic Duo, dared to challenge this intergalactic threat and bring them to justice.

There is no denying that animated superhero shows have come a long way since Super Friends. The Challenge of the Super Friends is very '70s in presentation, riddled with inconsistencies and drawing mistakes, and allowing heroes to fly even if they couldn't fly in the comics. However, there is no denying the staying power of the stories, its concept, the superheroes/villains pairing and its overall charm. Included in this set are a couple of nice features, particularly the superheroes/villains biographies, each with their own mini-video. There is also a good, brief documentary of today's comic book and TV show creators reflecting on their impressions of Challenge of the Super Friends and its influence on their careers. If you want to take a trip down memory lane to the Hall of Justice or the swamps of the Hall of Doom, you will not be disappointed by this set. --Rob Bracco

Thunderbirds Are Go (International Rescue Edition) Review

Thunderbirds Are Go (International Rescue Edition) Overview

Blast off into interplanetary adventure with the first feature-length film starring the International Rescue team: millionaire ex-astronaut Jeff Tracy, his five stalwart sons, the fabulous secret agent Lady Penelope and, of course, their incredibly futuristic fleet of Thunderbird rescue ships! When the might spaceship Zero X is sabotaged on its first take-off for Mars, International Rescue is summoned to provide security for the second launch attempt. But after the ship successfully reaches its destination, it is attacked by rampaging alien life forms! Once again, the brave and resourceful International Rescue team is called into action. Can the team help the damaged ship re-enter Earth's atmosphere and prevent a crash-landing with devastating consequences?

Thunderbirds Are Go (International Rescue Edition) Specifications

Inspired by such disparate influences as Bonanza, James Bond, and the pop culture of '60s London, Thunderbirds burst onto the British television scene in 1964. The Tracey family of International Rescue consisted of retired astronaut and widower Jeff (a dead ringer for John Forsythe), and his five sons, each with his own Thunderbird rocket ship. They were assisted in their operations by the likes of Phil Spector look-alike Brains and Lady Penelope of the pink Rolls and baggy-faced chauffeur, Parker. The Hood, who bears an uncanny resemblance to the Yul Brynner of The King and I, is their archenemy. Thunderbirds Are Go was creator Gerry Anderson's first full-length feature. If the pacing is uneven and the supermarionettes (electronic puppets) not as expressive as the Claymation figures, it's an entertaining introduction nonetheless. The plot doesn't make much sense, but the special effects by Derek Meddings, who would provide the miniatures for several Bond features, hold up surprisingly well. And some of the set pieces are a real treat, particularly the Mars rescue and the dream trip to the Swinging Star, a cross between a '50s drive-in and a Christmas tree ornament. Cliff Richard and the Shadows contribute a couple of groovy numbers and perform--marionette style--at the Star for the entertainment of youngest son Alan (the "Little Joe" of the family) and the stylish Penelope, a plasticene version of Julie Christie. That surrealistic sequence alone is worth the price of admission. (Ages 5 to 12) --Kathleen C. Fennessy

A Flintstones Christmas Carol Overview

There's just one shopping day until Christmas! Fred is so wrapped up in his acting debut as Scrooge in the Bedrock production of "A Christmas Carol" that he's completely forgotten to buy any gifts. And worse, he's left baby Pebbles stranded at Cave Care Center! But wife Wilma and a few familiar ghosts perform a true Christmas miracle, helping hubby Fred remember the true meaning of the season. Join Barney, Betty, Bam Bam, and Dino in this hilarious stone-age version of the magical holiday classic.

A Flintstones Christmas Carol Specifications

Baste the turkeysaurus and head over to Bloomingshale's for some last-minute shopping; it's Christmastime in Bedrock. Fred and the gang have more than the usual festive preparations up their prehistoric sleeves, however, as they are staging a production of "The Christmas Carol" with Fred in the role of Scrooge. Things take a frightening turn when--in the classic tradition of method acting--Fred takes his role to heart and becomes a bit humbuggish himself. So preoccupied with his role is he, that he forgets to pick up Pebbles from day care, leaves Christmas shopping off his list of things to do, and belittles the parts played by his friends (such as Barney as Bob Cratchit). When the Bedrock bug (a flu virus) begins to fell cast members, it provides the ideal opportunity for costume maker and stage manager Wilma to take on understudy duties and scare some sense into her self-absorbed husband. And just in time for Christmas Eve. God bless them, every one. (Ages 2 and older.) --Kimberly Heinrichs
