Noddy and Friends v.1 with Bonus Book (Amazon.com Exclusive) Specifications

Noddy is a CGI animated, PBS series that takes place in Toyland, a magical community populated by toys that are committed to friendship, respect, caring, and cooperation. The ever-friendly Noddy is a toy doll who loves to help others, so when an argument arises over who will lead the Toyland Annual Parade in "The Toy Town Parade," Noddy helps his friends realize that it doesn't matter who goes first as long as everyone gets to participate. Noddy's sense of inclusiveness leads him to welcome the legless Wobblyman as a player on his soccer team in 'Toy Town's Winning Team," but his teammates are upset when Noddy's gesture threatens to cost their team a victory. What Noddy and his friends soon learn is that everyone has a special talent. The pressure is on when Mr. Sparks tries to fix the broken town clock in "Mr. Sparks and the Broken Clock"--can a little inspiration from the resourceful Noddy help the floundering Mr. Sparks repair the clock? Collaboration and showmanship lead to an exciting summer fair act in "The Balancing Act" and Noddy's disappointment over not knowing his family tree is eased by the realization that his friends make up one big extended family in "Noddy's Family Tree." A 2-minute "Say it with Noddy" segment follows each 10-minute episode and relates simple words or phrases in languages like Spanish, French, Mandarin, Swahili, and Russian. Bonus features include a Noddy music video and a richly illustrated, 29-page hardback book "Noddy Lends a Hand" that highlights Noddy's caring nature. (Ages 2 to 5) --Tami Horiuchi

Check Out Aria the Animation Season 1 for $24.99

Aria the Animation Season 1 Review

Aria the Animation Season 1 Overview

In the early 24th century, Mars has been terraformed by mankind into a sparkling planet covered in water. Akari Mizunashi, at the age of 15, has left everything behind to travel to that reborn world, now known as Aqua. More than anything, Akari wants to be an "undine" - a female gondolier who navigates the canals of the Aquan city of Neo-Venezia. As she begins her training with the prestigious Aria Company, will she be up to the challenges that await her on the path to achieve her dream? Contains the complete 13-episode first season. DVD Features: Scene access, Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo audio for Japanese dialogue, English subtitles and English on-screen translations. PLUS: More features to be announced.

Aria the Animation Season 1 Specifications

The shojo (girl's) fantasy Aria (2005) takes places 150 years after Mars was "terraformed" into the watery planet Aqua. Fifteen-year-old Akari Mizunashi has come to Aqua to become an "Undine," a woman who steers a gondola through the canals of Neo Venezia, offering information about its landmarks to tourists. She and her friends Aika and Alice study with the three most celebrated Undines in the city. Although Akari can be a bit of a klutz at times, her existence is so tame and wholesome, it makes "The Bobsey Twins" feel like life in the fast lane. Some critics complained that the popular Azumanga Daioh, like Seinfeld, wasn't about anything. But the girls in that high school cast acted like real individuals; Akari and her friends behave so well they suggest throwbacks to a '50s juvenile novel. The idea of building a perfect replica of the city of Venice as a tourist attraction fits in with the Japanese predilection for creating theme restaurants and parks of all sizes. A pastel-colored Neverland inhabited exclusively by cute teenagers and cute (if strange-looking) cats may appeal to adolescent girls, but it will quickly bore their brothers and older viewers. Kozue Amano's Aria manga scored a big hit in Japan, and the animated series spawned two sequels and an OVA. In Japanese only, with English subtitles. (Rated 13 and older, but suitable for viewers two or three years younger: brief nudity, minor cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon

Check Out Toy Story & Toy Story 2 (2 Pack) for $39.99

Toy Story & Toy Story 2 (2 Pack) Review

Toy Story & Toy Story 2 (2 Pack) Overview

Toy Story
There is greatness in film that can be discussed, dissected, and talked about late into the night. Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--we smile at the spell it puts us into and are refreshed, and nary a word needs to be spoken. This kind of entertainment is what they used to call "movie magic," and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature. Just a picture of these bright toys on the cover of Toy Story looks intriguing, reawakening the kid in us. Filmmaker John Lasseter's shorts (namely Knickknack and Tin Toy, which can be found on the Pixar video Tiny Toy Stories) illustrate not only a technical brilliance but also a great sense of humor--one in which the pun is always intended. Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second, much like another film innovator, Walt Disney.

Lasseter's story is universal and magical: what do toys do when they're not played with? Cowboy Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Andy's favorite bedroom toy, tries to calm the other toys (some original, some classic) during a wrenching time of year--the birthday party, when newer toys may replace them. Sure enough, Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) is the new toy that takes over the throne. Buzz has a crucial flaw, though--he believes he's the real Buzz Lightyear, not a toy. Bright and cheerful, Toy Story is much more than a 90-minute commercial for the inevitable bonanza of Woody and Buzz toys. Lasseter further scores with perfect voice casting, including Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head and Wallace Shawn as a meek dinosaur. The director-animator won a special Oscar for "the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated film." In other words, the movie is great. --Doug Thomas

Toy Story 2
John Lasseter and his gang of high-tech creators at Pixar create another entertainment for the ages. Like the few great movie sequels, Toy Story 2 comments on why the first one was so wonderful while finding a fresh angle worthy of a new film. The craze of toy collecting becomes the focus here, as we find out Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) is not only a beloved toy to Andy but also a rare doll from a popular '60s children's show. When a greedy collector takes Woody, Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) launches a rescue mission with Andy's other toys. To say more would be a crime because this is one of the most creative and smile-inducing films since, well, the first Toy Story.

Although the toys look the same as in the 1994 feature, Pixar shows how much technology has advanced: the human characters look more human, backgrounds are superior, and two action sequences that book-end the film are dazzling. And it's a hoot for kids and adults. The film is packed with spoofs, easily accessible in-jokes, and inspired voice casting (with newcomer Joan Cusack especially a delight as Cowgirl Jessie). But as the Pixar canon of films illustrates, the filmmakers are storytellers first. Woody's heart-tugging predicament can easily be translated into the eternal debate of living a good life versus living forever. Toy Story 2 also achieved something in the U.S. two other outstanding 1999 animated features (The Iron Giant, Princess Mononoke) could not: it became a huge box-office hit. --Doug Thomas

Check Out The Tick Vs. Season Two for $9.49

The Tick Vs. Season Two Review

The Tick Vs. Season Two Feature

  • approx. run time 255 minutes

The Tick Vs. Season Two Overview

Evil-doers, check your rear-view mirror because justice is closer than it appears! Everyone’s favorite big blue hero, along with his trusty moth sidekick Arthur, is back for more hilarious adventures in THE TICK VS. SEASON TWO. With a heart as big as the moon and as warm as bathwater, The Tick flexes the muscle of goodness to keep the citizens of The City safe from the strangest collection of villains yet. Season Two brings the return of über-villains El Seed and Brainchild, our heroes make their reality TV debuts and The Tick whittles himself a new sidekick when a woman comes between him and his old chum Arthur. With a cornucopia of laughs and thrills stuffed onto three shiny discs, THE TICK VS. SEASON TWO delivers a one-two punch of goodness straight to your home entertainment center.

The Tick Vs. Season Two Specifications

The second season of the enormously entertaining and offbeat animated series The Tick arrives on DVD in an attractive package (with cover art by the character's creator, Ben Edlund) but little else, which should give pause to some of the program's dedicated fans. The Tick's surreal adventures got even stranger by the series' second season – among his opponents this season are the giant whale Blowhole, who makes trouble for The Tick and his temporary sidekick, Little Wooden Boy ("Little Wooden Boy and the Belly of Love"), portly villainess Venus, who removes The Tick's arms to commit a crime spree with them ("Armless But Not Harmless"), and Multiple Santa, a petty criminal whose encounter with a electrified billboard allows him to transform into Kris Kringle clones ("The Tick Loves Santa!"). Long-running nemeses like Brainchild and El Seed make return appearances as well (in "Coach Fussell's Lament" and "Bloomsday," respectively), and the episodes themselves have held up well in the decade since their broadcast. But one of the season's funniest episodes, "Alone Together" (written by Christopher McCulloch of The Venture Bros.), is inexplicably missing from this two-disc set, and its absence, along with a lack of any supplemental features save for a collectible lithograph, is bound to have Tick followers scratching their head over why their favorite blue tights-wearing crime fighter is getting such a raw deal. Could this be the work of Chairface Chippendale? -- Paul Gaita

Check Out Buster & Chauncey's Silent Night for $3.42

Buster & Chauncey's Silent Night Review

Buster & Chauncey's Silent Night Overview

TWO MOUSE MUSICIANS TRAVEL TO A SMALL AUSTRIAN TOWN WHERE THEY HOPE TO PLAY DURING THE QUEEN'S HOLIDAY VISIT. SPECIAL FEATURES: FULL SCREEN VERSION, 2-CHANNEL DOLBY SURROUND AND STEREO SOUND, LANGUAGES: ENGLISH, FRENCH, SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE, SUBTITLES IN ENGLISH, FRENCH, SPANISH, PORTUGUES, CHINESE, KOREAN AND MORE.

Buster & Chauncey's Silent Night Specifications

This is a nicely animated musical that's loosely based on the true story of the composition of "Silent Night" in 1818 by Father Joseph Mohr and Choirmaster Franz Gruber. It's Christmas Eve and mouse-icians Buster and Chauncey are on their way to the town of Oberndorf to sing for the Queen. The whole town is a flutter with preparations, so imagine Burghermeister Huffenmeir's distress when the Duke of Raoche and his niece Lady Gretchen arrive a day early. Also newly arrived is Christina, an orphan girl on her way to Vienna in hopes of finding her aunt and uncle. When the Oberndorf treasure is found missing, all clues point to Christina, who steadfastly denies the charge. Father Joseph believes the girl, but it's up to Chauncey and Buster to prove her innocence and apprehend the real thieves. In the end, the Christmas celebration with the Queen is not as lavish as originally planned but proves much more meaningful. The town discovers that the true meaning of Christmas is not fame or fortune but friendship, sharing, and giving, and they celebrate their new wisdom by singing "Silent Night," a Christmas song composed by Father Joseph and Franz on that tumultuous Christmas Eve. This musical is full of compelling songs written by such great musical composers as Stephen Flaherty, Lynn Ahrens, Barry Harman, and Keith Herrmann. Voice talents Phil Hartman, Marie Osmond, and Tom Arnold add much to an already great production. What a wonderful way to communicate the meaning of Christmas. (Ages 3-12) --Tami Horiuchi
